we had to do that for a yamaha outboard we bought new. my dad and I could've done all the work ourselves, but it would've voided the warranty if it wasn't a certified yamaha tech.

damn, how many car companies are still recommending 3k oil changes?

Ford moved to 7500 miles starting this year. Toyota recommends 5k, my old infiniti was 7.5k, etc.

Well the oil change places still tell everyone to do it at 3,000 intervals for obvious reasons.

I did my explorer every 5,000 and was fine.

My wrangler I can't really tell I just do it every so often because the odometer is broken.

My Land Rover gets it every 3,000 along with a quart of marvel mystery oil.

actually, i do have my jeep serviced/worked on at tim marburger dodge but that's because the head mechanic moved from elsewhere and he's worked on it for years.

Your manual should have a recommended interval. I'd stick to that, whatever it happens to be. The "percentage life remaining" things often don't quite jive with reality.

Actually, in most new cars, at least by GM I know for sure, they use an array of factors to determine the percent life remaining numbers.. it's not just a mileage thing anymore. If I drove the shit out of my corvette it'd only get 3-4K before it said to change the oil or I could drive it easy and get almost twice that. They do a lot of testing to find the right algorithms while they're developing the engine. I'm sure there are some brands where this isn't the case though. I'd still change it at whatever the manual says is the max interval even if the percentage gauge says you don't need to

A receipt that's got five quarts of oil and a filter on it should suffice as a service record if you're doing it yourself.

^^I drive slow and coast a lot. I like to squeeze every last inch possible out of my gas. I'd imagine it helps my oil life out. I get around 35 mpg in the city too, which is funny, because I only get 31 mpg driving 65 on the beltline.

just save your receipts for the filters and oil, that will be enough proof in the very unlikely event of a oil related failure.

I'm pretty sure they can't force you to get it done somewhere. Keep the receipt for the oil and write down the mileage on the receipt.

My 2003 Accord says every 10k miles...but 5k for severe service. Guess how most of us can classify our driving, boys and girls...

That said, I still only change my oil every 10k miles with a filter change every 5k...when I run Mobil 1.

The Amsoil oil and filter that I've changed to recently is supposedly good for 25k. I'll go at least 15k on it and have no qualms about doing so.

What the fuck ever you do...do NOT go to Jiffy Lube. Most oil change places pretty much use the same bargain basement oil filters and oil, and that does include Jiffy Lube. BUT...Jiffy Lube pays grocery store wages for doing some pretty nasty work. What kind of folks do you think end up working there?

isn't Amsoil like $8/quart? I use synthetic, but whatever I can find on sale. I would prefer to use Mobil 1 though. I think I still have like 10 quarts of Valvoline synthetic from the last sale. Got them for like $2/quart.

As far as synthetics go, Mobil 1 and Amsoil are the only two mainstream oils I will use. Most others are made by hydrocracking naturally occurring hydrocarbons to produce the net result, and as such, really push the whole "synthetic" moniker.

There's also a whole bunch of other details concerning the base stock structure that I'm not really versed in. Suffice it to say, Valvoline Synthetic isn't high on my list of what to buy.

I don't know too many shops that use Amsoil. You might have to buy it and take it with you.

Just don't let them use a shitty filter. Bring that too. And if you buy a Fram, you are buying yet another shitty filter. About the shittiest, actually.
