11/14/2007 2:19:59 PM
^^ I would, but I am told I need service records if my car ever needs warranty service (it's only got 3,000 miles on it now).^ They'll just be like GTFO.[Edited on November 14, 2007 at 2:21 PM. Reason : ]
11/14/2007 2:21:03 PM
what kind of car is it?and i've never heard of needing to show service records for warranty work, though it wouldn't surprise me, and i'm sure it varies between manufacturers.
11/14/2007 2:23:12 PM
It's a Chevy Cobalt I think I'm gonna trade up when the new Camaro comes out though.
11/14/2007 2:25:57 PM

i always go to the AAA car care placethere's one at crossroadsand one at avent ferry/gormanfairly cheap, and they actually DO the work.. and do it well.
11/14/2007 2:29:52 PM
we had to do that for a yamaha outboard we bought new. my dad and I could've done all the work ourselves, but it would've voided the warranty if it wasn't a certified yamaha tech.
11/14/2007 2:30:52 PM
damn, how many car companies are still recommending 3k oil changes?Ford moved to 7500 miles starting this year. Toyota recommends 5k, my old infiniti was 7.5k, etc.
11/14/2007 2:32:56 PM
Well the oil change places still tell everyone to do it at 3,000 intervals for obvious reasons. I did my explorer every 5,000 and was fine. My wrangler I can't really tell I just do it every so often because the odometer is broken. My Land Rover gets it every 3,000 along with a quart of marvel mystery oil.
11/14/2007 2:35:42 PM
It says I still have 69% oil life left. If that's true then I won't need an oil change til after 10,000 miles.
11/14/2007 2:36:33 PM
Not toyota of concord. They rip you off after the trust has been built. Service with a smile, man. Makes me even more angry thinking about it!
11/14/2007 2:37:16 PM
thats why i dont have my routine maintenance done at a dealership. sorry to hear that punchmonk. Where do you live in concord, maybe i can recommend a mechanicactually, i do have my jeep serviced/worked on at tim marburger dodge but that's because the head mechanic moved from elsewhere and he's worked on it for years.

11/14/2007 2:43:34 PM
Actually, in most new cars, at least by GM I know for sure, they use an array of factors to determine the percent life remaining numbers.. it's not just a mileage thing anymore. If I drove the shit out of my corvette it'd only get 3-4K before it said to change the oil or I could drive it easy and get almost twice that. They do a lot of testing to find the right algorithms while they're developing the engine. I'm sure there are some brands where this isn't the case though. I'd still change it at whatever the manual says is the max interval even if the percentage gauge says you don't need to
11/14/2007 2:46:28 PM
A receipt that's got five quarts of oil and a filter on it should suffice as a service record if you're doing it yourself.
11/14/2007 2:49:21 PM
^^I drive slow and coast a lot. I like to squeeze every last inch possible out of my gas. I'd imagine it helps my oil life out. I get around 35 mpg in the city too, which is funny, because I only get 31 mpg driving 65 on the beltline.[Edited on November 14, 2007 at 2:52 PM. Reason : ]

it always does feel good to change your oil or install something on your automobile yourself.I'm not the most mechanically savvy guy around but I like working on a car. I do hate crawling under sometimes though, but that's cause i'm lanky
11/14/2007 4:17:40 PM
I don't have any jack stands and it's pretty low to the ground. I'm sure I could squeeze under it but it wouldn't be pleasant
11/14/2007 4:18:44 PM
I like doing it myself too, only problem is living in an apartment with no place to do it
11/14/2007 4:18:47 PM
11/14/2007 4:22:18 PM
just save your receipts for the filters and oil, that will be enough proof in the very unlikely event of a oil related failure.
11/14/2007 5:43:18 PM
11/14/2007 6:09:00 PM
My 2003 Accord says every 10k miles...but 5k for severe service. Guess how most of us can classify our driving, boys and girls...SEVERE FUCKING SERVICE.That said, I still only change my oil every 10k miles with a filter change every 5k...when I run Mobil 1.The Amsoil oil and filter that I've changed to recently is supposedly good for 25k. I'll go at least 15k on it and have no qualms about doing so.What the fuck ever you do...do NOT go to Jiffy Lube. Most oil change places pretty much use the same bargain basement oil filters and oil, and that does include Jiffy Lube. BUT...Jiffy Lube pays grocery store wages for doing some pretty nasty work. What kind of folks do you think end up working there?
11/14/2007 6:10:56 PM
change the oil yourself. It should take at most 30 mins, and you'll save at least $15, maybe even more if your car uses synthetic.
11/14/2007 6:14:59 PM
My last oil change = $60. And I did it. Amsoil.
11/14/2007 6:16:26 PM
isn't Amsoil like $8/quart? I use synthetic, but whatever I can find on sale. I would prefer to use Mobil 1 though. I think I still have like 10 quarts of Valvoline synthetic from the last sale. Got them for like $2/quart.
11/14/2007 6:19:43 PM
As far as synthetics go, Mobil 1 and Amsoil are the only two mainstream oils I will use. Most others are made by hydrocracking naturally occurring hydrocarbons to produce the net result, and as such, really push the whole "synthetic" moniker. There's also a whole bunch of other details concerning the base stock structure that I'm not really versed in. Suffice it to say, Valvoline Synthetic isn't high on my list of what to buy.
11/14/2007 6:25:38 PM
so you wouldn't get valvoline even if it's $2/quart? my car burns about a quart every 3000 miles, so it might not worth going amsoil. Also, I read somewhere online that topping off your oil will prolong your oil life.
11/14/2007 6:30:07 PM
In your case, I think it's absolutely fine to use it. It would be foolish for you to spend more, only to burn a quart every 3000 miles.
11/14/2007 7:04:04 PM
NOT Jiffy Lube, but I'm assuming you already know that.
11/14/2007 7:05:04 PM
I went to walmart and got some Mobile 1 synthetic and a Fram oil filter... my gas mileage went up about 15%. I was amazed. I wonder what shitty oil was in there when they sold me the car.
11/23/2007 7:48:55 PM
getting an oil change next friday thank god...prolly going to triple a

Raleigh Tire (Capital Blvd next to Bobby Murray Chevrolet) does oil changes for $28, all vehicles. These guys are great, just call for an appointment to be sure they aren't swamped.
12/4/2007 2:05:17 AM
where can i go to get my oil changed that uses amsoil products?
12/4/2007 2:11:07 AM
I don't know too many shops that use Amsoil. You might have to buy it and take it with you.Just don't let them use a shitty filter. Bring that too. And if you buy a Fram, you are buying yet another shitty filter. About the shittiest, actually.
12/4/2007 2:38:43 AM
shit, if you're supplying the oil and filter, you may as well do it yourself
