Quote :
"Rain will likely begin early Saturday morning, turn into snow by the late afternoon and continue falling until late Saturday night. The system could dump "a fair amount of snow," Fishel said, cautioning that variables always remain in the forecast this far out from a weather event.

"Now is there the possibility that this could all be farther north and west and most of us will get rain? Yeah," Fishel said.

"Is there a possibility it all shifts farther to the south and east and more of us get snow? You bet. ... So don't call the bookie in Vegas and bet on this one yet."

Bitterly cold Arctic air will follow the snowfall, possibly dropping temperatures to a low of 14 degrees on Saturday night and 10 degrees on Sunday night. The wind chill could make it feel like zero degrees on Sunday morning.

Between the possible snowstorm and chilly temperatures, "Old Man Winter (is) finally showing up," Fishel said."

Current NWS gridded forecast says it's not going to happen... at least in Raleigh.

Matt, I don't think they've updated the grids since the usual 3pm update. Did you see the 00Z run? It's hinting at a slightly colder solution. Such a close call! NWS usually plays it conservatively, however they did hint in the forecast discussion that there is POTENTIAL for a big snow depending on how the track of the low plays out.

Did he really say 6-12"? Fishel has some balls to say that! I'll have to watch it at 11pm to see for myself.

more like the computer model said 6-12". And I'll believe it when I see it. I should have gone in meteorology. There's no other job that you can not know what the hell is going on and still have a job.

And all of us meteorology majors come out of the woodwork. Maybe Fishel will make the "I'll jump in the fountain AGAIN if I'm wrong" bet. He just showed his computer model and an area of pink which is about 6-8 inches lined up from Sanford to Raleigh, to almost Nash County. Guess we'll see.....

When we had that snowfall that shut down the roads for 8 hours -

An hour before it started snowing I was in a meterology class where the Prof, former local head of the NWS, told the class it most certainly would not snow.

^^^^^ if you're talking about 2005 the snow wasn't what shut shit down it was icey as fuck. I remember on my way to class seeing cars slide down the western hill close to the beltline (I was like wtf,). Western had to be deverted, and by the time ncsu finally cancelled it was too late. Only took me 3.5 hours to go a 1.5 miles awesome day (by the end it was sunny and 45).

ha, I think the last time I saw a decent amount of snow was after we beat #1 duke at the RBC center my freshman year. It was snowing like hell after the game.

So I'm going to Asheville tomorrow, planning on coming back Sunday. Should I be prepared to not make it home? Or should that not be an issue?

^^It takes a big snow for I-40 to get bad....they take real good care of the main roads in the mountains. It would probably worse back in the Piedmont.

Yeah, deal was that there was supposed to be a couple of inches at RDU or he'd jump in the fountain. Couple of inches fell but that was near Roxboro. So, he took the plunge.
