Did you ever think that the one-dimensional representation of many characters on the show is a function of us, the viewer, experiencing the narrative through Dexter's cold, emotionless (allegedly) and alienating lens? He is, after all, our narrator.Or am I excusing cheesy writing and bad acting?

I am inclined to believe that you are onto something, but I do not believe that assumption could be made without reading the novel the series is based on. I'd hate to give cable television too much credit.I keep meaning to pick up the book.[Edited on March 17, 2008 at 7:13 PM. Reason : BUT I LOVE THE SHOW NONETHELESS]

^^^^ the books aren't really that good. The show is far superior. You don't really see any development in the characters besides Dexter. No back stories for the secondary characters.
