Besides obligatory porn, like what? What are you going to put on all those drives to fill them all the way before they fry or become obsolete?[Edited on April 1, 2008 at 11:10 AM. Reason : Not trying to shoot you down, I respect the shear amount of storage.]

^ With 1TB SATA Disks it's getting easier and easier. 12TB in 3U of rack space isn't bad.[Edited on April 1, 2008 at 1:31 PM. Reason : s]

If you need a few Terabytes today it's only a matter of time. Scalability has been a huge problem as companies have moved away from direct attached storage to shared storage. Add some new employees, maybe a merger, and a few new servers and your storage needs can grow exponentially in just a couple of years. When the time comes to upgrade just imagine the maximum amount of storage you'll need three years from now, double it, and make sure there is room for your SAN to grow if necessary.[Edited on April 1, 2008 at 1:39 PM. Yeah I agree. They easily have the money to do it..hell they pretty much let me buy whatever I want/need because I don't abuse it and make things last as long as I reasonably can.I'm planning on some SAN's in the near future. The biggest problem I'm having is getting the idea through to them that they don't need any new "servers" to have more storage.. they can be completely separate entities.[Edited on April 1, 2008 at 1:42 PM. Reason : and our servers are way under utilizied so def no reason to buy more]

^^ That's always been a big problem with management. Just show them that it's cheaper to have a massive amount of shared storage and less wasted space on each server and they'll usually get the point. You can also tell them it's green (less power consumption, less materials, less datacenter space, lower HVAC bills, etc.)What kind of equipment do you have now? The entry/midrange market has really blown up in the last few years. I'd think you should be able to get 12TB of reliable storage for under $15k-$20k (hardware costs) with scalability up to 48TB if you ever need more. Add switches, HBAs, iSCSI adapters, etc. where applicable.[Edited on April 1, 2008 at 1:56 PM. Reason : s]

speaking of retarded IT departments that are scared of upgrading, we have a 12MB (that's right, MEGABYTE...it's not a typo) inbox limit for out MS Exchange email accounts. As you can imagine, it is pretty easy to go over quota if you don't download your messages every couple of days...best part is that if you do go over, all subsequent emails bounce to sender, no local record or anything.

lol. Disk space is cheap as dirt. Customers however, are not. Your IT department needs a good slapping.

on my ESX farm at work, i have 100 300GB drives controlled by an EMC CX340, just got a new shipment from EMC in on friday of another cabinet/controller and 50 more drives, these are 500GB each LUN is raid 5 so of course there's some storage overhead, but as it is right now we've got around 20TB and should have a little over 30TB if the facilities guys would ever install the damn power under the subfloor so i can finish racking the new stuff and don't even get me started on our netapp filers... i haven't checked in a while, but we have MASSIVE amounts of storage on the user profile folders. think about it. we each get 10GB space... around 8000 employees... yeah.we got lots of space at work and wtf, 12MB for an exchange quota? fail :\
