and the fire generates enough heat, then the fire will generate it's own thunderstorm.Isn't that cool?I just got done packing my bags to go to the Evans Road Fire in Hyde County.13,200+ acres of high poccossin on fire with heavy organic soils. We'll be squirtin water on this one for months.

:/hope you like mosquitosI drove back from Hatteras one late night a long time ago, and there were so many of them.... with the headlights it looked like it was snowing.
6/5/2008 1:48:25 AM
I actually got stuck working on the incident management team. The IMT basically manages the fire (tracking resources/firefighters, taking care of the logistics, planning the strategies/tactics, etc).I'd rather be eating smoke and swatting yellow flies on a 95° day than sitting in a trailer keying firefighter info into a database.
6/5/2008 2:01:14 AM
that actually is coolhave fun man
6/5/2008 2:11:47 AM
ew, i drove through this mess on the way home to kitty hawk last night. i was still getting ash on my car in southern shores (a good 70 miles from the source). apparently, the smoke could last for months if we don't get enough rain. it's smelly!!
6/5/2008 8:59:02 AM
You could actually see that crap on radar yesterday...
6/5/2008 9:03:21 AM
be careful chris!!!!
6/5/2008 9:35:38 AM
he'll be gone 10 days, then rotated out, then possibly back another 10 days.
6/5/2008 11:37:53 AM
I thought the county hires firefighters for this kind of shit...
6/5/2008 11:46:51 AM
They probably do for normal house or building fires, I doubt they have the manpower or resources to take control of 13,200 acres.
6/5/2008 11:49:28 AM
i say ...let it burn.

pocosinHOLY SHIT"Eastern N.C. wildfire grows to 20,500 acres"http://wral.com/news/local/story/2996253/it's doubled in size over 24 hours...plus from what i've noticed about the WRAL news articles versus the actual size of this fire, WRAL is usually a couple thousand below what it actually is...

Oh, NOAA has people that monitor and document significant event imagery for such things as storms, fires, floods, etc. Here's what they had on the fire:You can click for a larger image.

6/12/2008 5:16:46 PM
biggest fire in the nation right now, biggest fire in NC in the past 20 years. we always send crews out to TX, GA, etc when they have fires but nobody's sending anybody here.
6/12/2008 5:18:49 PM
I can't get ANYTHING on inciweb to load
6/12/2008 5:42:56 PM
Fire is just under 40,000 ac, smaller than previous estimates due to better mapping. It's a type 1 incident but we'll still be here as a type 2 team with a NIMO team. We've got NC resources from the wildlife resources commission, parks, div of air quality, and div of emergency management.Federal resources from the USFS, US Fish and Wildlife, National park service, bureau of indian affairs, and the nature conservancy.Southeast Compact (state forestry) resources from GA, SC, KY, TN.We've got a flooding operation to try to put it out in the areas that our equipment can't get into (too swampy) and we're putting in huge fire breaks. We've also been waiting for the right conditions to do a burnout. It's gonna last a long time due to the organic soils. The Dismal Swamp (in VA) has a fire that's burning towards the NC border, it's still on US Fish and wildlife land. Last report was 800 ac, but it's probably a lot bigger now. They've ordered a USFS type 2 incident management team for that one.Interesting times...[Edited on June 13, 2008 at 5:10 PM. no it's actually not very cool at all
6/13/2008 5:27:04 PM
Just had a planning briefing. The South 1 fire in the dismal swamp is projected to be on private NC lands in 24 hours. The NCFS is obligated to fight any fire on state and private lands...we dunno if we're just gonna deligate authority to the USFWS or if we'll do a unified command thing.Either way, we're stretched thin and will be stretched thinner...
6/15/2008 12:54:40 PM
GL with that. A job like that would be some heavy shit to deal with during times like these.
6/15/2008 12:59:06 PM

This should have been the perpetual fire thread. For any of you interested, we've got a 500 ac fire in a swamp in Bladen County.Accessability's supposed to suck...the initial attack guys called for a type 2 team the first night of the fire because they got 8 dozers stuck in the swamp before they even got to the fire. One of our other incident management teams was mobilized yesterday to handle it.We've ordered one of Florida's type 2 teams to transition with us on the Evans Rd fire so we can support the new fire.
