Fatal wound was self-inflicted

An autopsy of a Greenville man who died June 11 of a stab wound through a bullet-proof vest revealed that the fatal wound was accidentally self-inflicted, according to a state medical examiner.

Anthony Charles Lacy, 26, a former cook at Gilligan's Restaurant in Greenville, was with friends at his apartment on the night of June 10, according to a friend and co-worker at Gilligan's.

The police report described a scenario in which Lacy and his friends were drinking, according to Dr. M.G.F. Gilliland, of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University Division of Forensic Pathology, who performed the autopsy.

Gilliland quoted the police investigative report that after about three hours Lacy produced a camouflage vest that he owned and described to his friends as bulletproof. Believing that the vest would stop a knife, Lacy donned the vest and challenged a friend to stab at it, the examiner said.

One friend reportedly told police that he stabbed at the vest once but did not penetrate it.

Subsequent interviews conducted by police investigators indicated that the friend was holding one type of knife, but that Lacy held a different knife and stabbed at his own chest several times with it before the knife penetrated the vest, Gilliland said.

Witnesses at the apartment reported that Lacy then shouted, "I'm hit" and crouched over, then collapsed, Gilliland said.

His friends said they immediately transported Lacy to the Pitt County Memorial Hospital Emergency Department, where he was pronounced dead within 20 minutes, Gilliland said.

The police conclusion was that the stabbing was an accidental injury, Gilliland said.

A toxicology report on Lacy from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner indicated a .15 blood alcohol content, and the medical examiner's report indicated "alcohol intoxication" contributed to the accident.

A police spokesman said that their investigation notes were turned over to the Pitt County District Attorney for disposition of the case.
