There is really no season for lobster at all in Maine. Except for bad days in the winter months, lobstermen are out there bringing them in. More tend to be caught in the summer months because the tourist demands are much higher. The best lobster is not dependant upon any particular month at all. Generally speaking, the better restaurants get the choice of the catch, provided they are willing to pay a little more to get the best. That is generally related to size and freshness. So how can you tell, you can't. You can ask if they are fresh, but that is no guarantee.

only when deadliest catch is on. even though they catch crabs

I was there in early march and the place we went didnt have fresh lobster.I guess i figured there was a season.
8/10/2008 9:07:54 PM
anything that is alive when they put it in the boiling water is about as fresh as you can get
8/10/2008 9:09:30 PM
lobster in a box?
8/10/2008 9:10:42 PM
sometimes they're shipped from other places.I want it pulled straight outa the ocean into a pot of boiling water. when you ship those guys they get all stressed out and it fucks the meat upbut I guess im being picky.

if you eat at any of the higher end restaurants that are right on the water, you can pretty much guarantee you are getting good shit. a lot of them buy their lobsters that morning.
8/10/2008 9:25:08 PM
Yeah if you're not paying a lot, then the lobster you get is probably frozen. Sad, ain't it.

I'm going to Maine in two weeks. I will let you know how the lobster is

There is kind of a season as far as the amount of meat that is in the lobster. When they molt they are mostly filled with water instead of packed with meat. Soft shell lobster are a ton cheaper than the hard shell lobsters that have a ton of meat. I believe they are soft shell right now but Im not sure how long their molting "season" lasts and they get hard againJust ask the restaurant or lobster seller if they are hard shell or soft shell

In the northeast, a lot of the McDonalds by the coast have lobster on the menu
8/10/2008 11:49:48 PM
but its south american lobster and not maine lobster.its cheaper and they're more like crawfish.

back in the day they used to make prisoners eat lobsters, since they were considered nasty bottom feeders.
