Never seen that one. But, there used to be one on the side of a road near High Rock lake. A bunch of clan memebers lived nearby. The sign said "Don't let the sun set on your nigger eyes". It was probably a 4X8 ft sign too. They took it down when I was a kid.

I taught for a year at a high school in rural Johnston County, and there was not that much racial tension.
10/19/2008 12:58:35 PM
Do you remember where it was exactly? I was thinking it was closer to Benson.

The people I asked said it was on the left as you headed north on I-95 into Smithfield. Taken down in the late 1980's. I've heard it's still around, sitting in some redneck's backyard.[Edited on October 19, 2008 at 1:17 PM. Reason : It would make sense that they would orient it so southbound travelers would see it.]
10/19/2008 1:15:39 PM
Are you sure it was taken down in the late 80s?I've heard more than one account of it being up in the early 90s, at least.

Could be.

dude, there are plenty of black folks in Smithfield, despite the efforts of the Klan. They're all a bunch of tards (the Klan, that is).BTW I still remember the phone number: 934-4493. I got a weird thing for remembering numbers.

hmm I think it was there in the 80's, my family didn't move to joco until like 86 and my dad remembers seeing the sign

F. Glenn Miller's autobiography. Mainly focuses on events in Johnston County and Raleigh. Very interesting to get a first hand account of this drama from the inside.http://www.whty.org/book/index.htmHere's a NY Times article about the federal bust of his JoCo operation. I guess it could be viewed as a precursor to Waco. In any case, federal agents descended on Benson by the hundreds.http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9B0DEFD6153CF93AA35752C0A961948260&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss[Edited on October 27, 2008 at 1:09 PM.
