Never seen that one. But, there used to be one on the side of a road near High Rock lake. A bunch of clan memebers lived nearby. The sign said "Don't let the sun set on your nigger eyes". It was probably a 4X8 ft sign too. They took it down when I was a kid.

One of my friends that graduated HS in 2002 said he remembers the sign from when he was in middle school too.

But I can't find it on Google, and I vaguely remember someone here posting it before.

I taught for a year at a high school in rural Johnston County, and there was not that much racial tension.

Do you remember where it was exactly? I was thinking it was closer to Benson.

The people I asked said it was on the left as you headed north on I-95 into Smithfield. Taken down in the late 1980's. I've heard it's still around, sitting in some redneck's backyard.

[Edited on October 19, 2008 at 1:17 PM. Reason : It would make sense that they would orient it so southbound travelers would see it.]

Are you sure it was taken down in the late 80s?

I've heard more than one account of it being up in the early 90s, at least.

Here's a color picture of the same sign from the 60s

i'm thinking this may not be the same sign others recall, but i'm sure it's similar.

I lived in Smithfield up until the mid '90s, and that sign was gone before the '80s.

That said, JoCo was a serious hotbed of Klan activity all throughout the '80s. F. Glenn Miller (of no relation to the Glenn Miller of big band fame) was the HNIC at the time. They had a telephone number you could dial and listen to Miller's recordings of the effects of niggers on the white man. I remember dialing it all the time in 7th grade (1984). Shortly thereafter, the recordings were discontinued.

The Klan paid visits to our jr. high and our high school at least once a year. We all thought it was a fucking riot...crazy as hell. And of course, they paraded downtown a time or two.

dude, there are plenty of black folks in Smithfield, despite the efforts of the Klan. They're all a bunch of tards (the Klan, that is).

BTW I still remember the phone number: 934-4493. I got a weird thing for remembering numbers.

Last time I was in Cincinnati someone told me the KKK headquarters were up there somewhere. Anyone know if that is true?

F. Glenn Miller's autobiography. Mainly focuses on events in Johnston County and Raleigh. Very interesting to get a first hand account of this drama from the inside.

Here's a NY Times article about the federal bust of his JoCo operation. I guess it could be viewed as a precursor to Waco. In any case, federal agents descended on Benson by the hundreds.

Lol, I know of one of these in the 252 area code. I wonder if it's the same guy. It's just an answering machine, so after the playing their message it goes "beep" and you can leave them a message of your own. I've been planning to unleash the number on TWW, but I'd like to have a way to record my own calls so I can join in on the shenanigans.
