I was doing quasi-accounting work for a consulting firm... but I am really more interested in the finance side. My goal is to eventually become a corporate controller at this point, but it takes luck and a lot of hard work.

Not full time, but I have a part time gig (20 hrs a week telecommuting) with the comapny I work for, making decent hourly rate to cover any costs -- I have no debt and a healthy savings built up.

I have my bases covered as best I can or else I wouldn't do it. I admit it's a bit of a risk... no argument here.

I feel for you... I'm quitting my job that has decent pay (well crap pay, but the benefits are good & the job is very secure) now that I've all but paid off my undergrad loans, and going to grad school at State in the fall & taking out loads of loans again.

Congrats on having the balls to do the right thing for yourself in the long run even if it is risky... it's not easy to do so in this economy.

Depends on what you make of it. I gave up a $35k bonus opportunity and $16k a year in salary to do what I've always wanted to do.

It is unconditionally worth it. Though I do miss my old budget

very similar situation here. two years ago i gave up an easy career that i had worked for 6 years and was well respected and sought after. but the salary was only so-so (even though i could more than double my salary through bonus) and wasn't in the field i was most passionate about. in the two years since i've made the same or less money and lost my job to bankruptcy twice, but i feel like i'm putting my natural skills to use now, don't have to work as many hours, and in the end i should be making significantly more money (my base salary now is twice what it was 2 years ago)

I extended a few weeks. Second to last day of work now. No big projects and lots of time on my hand the last week or so.

But I am officially staying on hourly in at my CA rate working from home in NC doing some odds and ends. Gonna try and do ~ 20 hours a week like I said so I have time to job search/network/interview...

^^ actually, on the contrary, I loved this area. But I'm a born and raised east coast person. I couldn't envision myself spending the rest of my life on the west coast no matter how much I like it... it's weird.

In March I will... but another big reason I'm moving back is cost of living. I was able to pay my way through grad school without accumulating any debt thanks largely because I lived at home (my choice -- I could have afforded my own place but I wanted to build up a savings).

^ to be fair, Slave lives a baller TWW life. A lot of folks just out of school and in their 20s would be thrilled with that, especially in this area. Problem is, it doesn't give you much out here!
