We've been robbed for a second time. In the few minutes they stayed while the alarm went off (cops were called in 3 minutes, arrived 8 after that), they stole our 46" TV and our PS3, ripping out cords and even yanking the jack right out of the wall. They busted in the back door, but we've repaired that on our own.We were pretty much told by our insurance rep not to file a claim because our deductible went from $500 to $1000 after the last break-in. This one, 6 months later, would probably cause us to be dropped due to being too high risk. Both times were nearly 2K in losses/damages.So now we're going to have to move, probably get a second mortgage because this place won't move fast. We have a baby on the way and were TRYING to get rid of the last of our credit card debt before it arrives. Doubt that will happen now. Bastards.Oh, and...RAWRRAWRRAWRRAWRRAWRRAWRRAWRRAWRRAWRRAWRRAWR PS- I know not all of Durham is bad. Just where we goddamn live.

that totally sucks sorry
7/9/2009 11:25:26 PM
I don't know any of the situation, and I know it sucks to have it happen.Between my fiance and me, we have had our cars broken into 4 times. ($8k in damage)Some tips for you and anyone else reading this.Put curtains up, and/or keep your blinds closed. Put a couple lights on timers around the house.Install deadbolts that use a key on both sides. Keep a key in when you are home, and remove the key when you leave. If the door has a large glass area near the lock, keep it covered with door blinds, or have a protective film appliedIn the door frame, you can have a piece of thin metal cut and then screwed in to resist the door being forced in.
7/9/2009 11:31:45 PM
sucks...sorry lauren
7/9/2009 11:33:42 PM
that sucks, i was thinking of moving to durham, thanks for the heads upi fear though this will spread to towns like cary, where there are a lot of vulnerable people^^good recommendations, my question is where your lights off?if so thats not a good idea, keep lights on, and there are other things you could do to scare people off[Edited on July 9, 2009 at 11:43 PM. see, getting married so early in life doesnt seem so cool now... thats why you hold that shit off until the mid 30s and you live in a sweet (and secure) condo downtown and not have to worry about shit like doors and kids etc.and throw away some of the 33,000 pets you have, you will save a fortune not having them around.[Edited on July 9, 2009 at 11:46 PM. I have been robbed once, since then the entire apartment got new locks, the person who left the door unlocked has been booted out, my bedroom door has been upgraded and given a deadbolt, and by bedroom door, vs just the safe, now has its own BurglerBomb
7/9/2009 11:48:27 PM
^two questions1 - what's a burglar bomb2 - how'd you kick out the roommateand a bonus question - was the first or second the one where you made a thread?
7/9/2009 11:50:34 PM
we practice a lot of preventative things (shades down, lights on when we leave, deadbolts, etc etc). bottom line is they wanted in, and they got in. it took 2-3 kicks to get the door to give, but it worked. i don't think they knew the alarm was sounding till the door was open, so they would have probably broken a window if the door didn't give. we moved here because this is what we could afford. things improved financially, but we stayed to build equity and remove debts. we were robbed once by a neighbor, who is now in juvie till he turns 18. we almost moved, but determined it wasn't financially wise since we probably can't sell this house easily (or quickly). we didn't have a shit ton saved away due to paying off debts. we upped our security after the first break-in. bottom line is people know (thanks to that asshole) what's in our house, and they're going to continue to target us as long as it's here. we had hoped once was enough, but apparently it isn't. there have been robberies all over in the last couple months, probably the same group of people. a neighbor noticed people around our house and called police, but by then the alarm was already tripped and the police were on their way.

get a guard dog[Edited on July 9, 2009 at 11:58 PM. Reason : i bet they would not get past drunktypers kinda dog]
7/9/2009 11:57:58 PM
we have 2 guard dogs. dizzy, super mini guard dog. and oz, 6 month old rottie who isn't ready for being loose yet because he's still a destructive puppy.dizzy even gave the cops trouble. her only real weakness is sticks/brooms. she's always backed down from them. so that's how the first robber kept her away (but she definitely slowed him down).and as you can see, oz is still learning to be tough. damn, what part of durham?
7/10/2009 12:19:34 AM
27704, north roxboro/east club areaneighbors were saying it wasn't this bad till last summer, then it all went downhill.
7/10/2009 12:25:29 AM
gotcha. I generally call the area in durham south of 40 and between 55 and 751 the DMZ. if you're gonna move, check out that area.
7/10/2009 12:27:17 AM
fuck durhamhonestly if thats all i could afford i'd hold out till i could afford something elsei know that's easy to say after all thats happened...but still.sorry about our losses, hope you're able to get the fuck out asap
7/10/2009 12:31:17 AM
our finances improved literally a MONTH after closing on the house. like a 26K pay raise. we had to move out of our apartment (my job was too far from it, we needed more space, etc) and couldn't find one that would allow 5 cats and a dog, so the option was to get a starter home and eventually move up after fixing it up. can't help it that a few assholes decided to ruin our plans. lots of people do what we did and never have a problem.
7/10/2009 12:37:57 AM
i know you are not keen on this moving idea but seriously. i'd gtfo. they are the moths and you are the light.
7/10/2009 12:40:35 AM
security door + hurricane glass = the win
7/10/2009 12:43:02 AM
yeah but if they break that again its a lot to replace i bet. and plus insurance is gonna be like fuck man we are not insuring this...
7/10/2009 12:45:10 AM
oh, we're moving. already talked to our realtor. she's working with the lender to determine what we would be able to get a mortgage for and at what rates, then we can start looking at houses we know are in our price range. she's a very aggressive lady and we know she'll work hard for us. we also go in saturday to meet with the agency about putting this house up for sale. my family has already offered to help financially (where they can) to get us a new home.

could you rent the house out so you're not paying two mortgages??as far as durham goes, it's just getting worse. my parents live in a nicer part of durham, right by southpoint and have been there since i started high school. things were legit for awhile but in the last year there have been tons of break-ins in our neighborhood and all are during the day.it sucks that this is the second hit because of the premiums going up a lot of times i'll leave a radio on a talk type station in the living room so if someone is creepin and they hear some voices they might just go for an easier target. like you said though, if they want in, they're going to get in. just hope you're never home if that happens. personally, i have already worked out an "oh shit" plan if someone breaks into my house (presumably at night while i'm asleep). i have a ninja as hell hiding spot i can get to from my bed and a panic button i can take with me to silently call police. toying with the idea of putting a small handgun in my hiding spot so if shit got real i could handle business (<3 self defense POV in Texas! and i could cap the intruder before they ever had a chance to spot me) i know it sounds wacky but if it ever happened i need to go into execution mode and not panic mode.

I was thinking trip wire/shotgun.I'd love to unload some rock salt into the face of an assailant.
7/10/2009 9:18:49 AM
^can't the robber press charges then?i know it sounds dumb, but i thought i heard a similar story in the news
7/10/2009 9:20:23 AM
man that really sucks i'm sorryand again, with the dog thing...i said this in the thread when she first got robbed. but the robbers that broke into our house last year cased it, knew we had a dog, and brought bacon and ground beef to make friends. so whatever on the guard dog aspect...if they're suckers for treats (like ours) they can be bribed.
7/10/2009 9:21:14 AM
Well, depends on if they're breathing. And if they happened to be holding a deadly weapon at the time of discharge.
7/10/2009 9:22:29 AM
It's funny, because people say that Durham isn't really as bad as everyone says it is, and then stuff like this happens. It either generally is or isn't that bad, and it sounds like it really is that bad.
7/10/2009 9:24:04 AM
well our work parking lot was tagged with gang signs this week (in durham)...sooooo
7/10/2009 9:29:07 AM
I want to see this burgler bomb in action.and no, you can't legally rig a shotgun to automatically shoot an intruder. the laws are strict enough on when a human can shoot someone, much less auto-rigging that shit.and durham is a shit hole.
7/10/2009 9:30:53 AM

There are plenty oF places in Durham I would happily live, roxoboro/club is not on that list.

^^^ I used to love to see those ads for carjack prevention devices in South Africa. One where the driver could press a button and a machete would swing out from under the car fast as hell and cut the jacker's feet off. Another was a flame thrower that came out from under the car. Another was a driver's seat with 6 shotgun shells in it facing up and that the driver would press a button as they exited the car and the next person to sit on the seat would get blasted in the ass...Those wacky South Africans.[Edited on July 10, 2009 at 9:36 AM.
