But seriously, my objection is this; socialism -- any form of collectivism really -- implies that part of your labor, and by an extension part of you, are the rightful property of the state, which is of necessity the final arbiter of all "public" goods.

^ I referred to the Republican Party as a minor-league fascist player last weekend to a friend of mine. Despite being far to the left of me she balked at the term, I suspect, because as a Jew she felt I was being a bit harsh on the GOP.

I simply pointed out that fascism was a collection of power at the state, the elevation of the state into something above the common man, the collusion with business interests, and outward displays of aggression towards perceived enemies. It didn't require anti-semitism per se.


She thought for a second and agreed with me.

The USPS became obsolete when UPS came onto the scene. There are some services which must be supplied by a municipality to keep the rest of the free market going (police, fire, military, etc.). A government-run healthcare system is not necessary. Health care is necessary, but you can't have a system in America like in Europe because Americans don't take care of themselves. People want to have health care and eat cake, too. You can't.

You could argue that the people who have gotten to that state have done so because they have not had health care and did not catch things early that they would've if they'd been able to go to the doctor.
