Whereabouts in AL are you? I moved to Huntsville a few years ago for work. It's grown on me. It's not too big of a city though, so it doesn't take too long a drive until things start getting uncomfortable. If you stay within the city things are pretty normal.

^^^ the state. I've got nothing against the band, I kind of like them. Hell, I'm not sure I hate the whole state, but anything from Montgomery south pretty much blows ass.


^ Enterprise, which is a small version of Dothan which is a big version of a lot of nothing. I can't get a tap beer, no decent music comes within three hours of here, no-one seems to need to have a hobby other than Jesus and football, and the north Florida beaches suck.

I don't know too much about the state really but someone said that I think either the mayor of Birmingham or the governor of AL is kinda crazy and rallies every four years to get the World Cup and the Olympics here.

And also, I'm with you on the hobbies of Jesus and football. All they talk about is freaking Auburn vs. Alabama. When I first started, the friends I made were like "You have to support a football team" so I was like "NCSU Wolfpack, son" and they were like "No I don't care about that, you have to support an Alabama team whether you like it or not" so I was like "Whatever. Calhoun Community College gets my support." The only other NCSU alum I know that lives here now also supports Calhoun Community College.

I know exactly what you mean. Roll Tide substitutes for a greeting around this state and each team swears the other teams fans are the most obnoxious.

One friend of mine tried to convince me that Virginia Tech fans worse than UA fans. What?

I keep getting told that I need to go to a game to appreciate it, but increasing the quantity and obnoxiousness of fans will not elevate my level of enjoyment . . . sorry.

I just started at Auburn for grad school and I'm not to fond of Alabama thus far. The people here suck and I kinda expected them to have the southern charm. I also feel bad about the blatant racism I see with the white kids here.

There is definitely more racial tension in Alabama than I was used to growing up in NC, from both sides.


A friend of mine who lives across the border in southern Georgia says tensions are getting pretty bad. There was a riot in Georgetown, Georgia a couple of weekends ago and one outside of Montgomery about a month ago.

I drove through the southern area of Montgomery on the way to Texas this summer and it was definitely one of the more depressed areas I've ever seen. Over half the businesses were shut down.

when i used to live in louisiana, i'd have to drive through that god forsaken state going to/from nc. boring drive, scary peeps.. got turned around in montgomery once (decided to stop for a sammich) and about got car jacked.

Well military runs around 23 . . . the locals do their own thing. Generally you're either a new lieutenant out of college who enjoys going to the shitty bar or shittier club and hitting on one of the three women in the place with the oh-so-original line, "hey I'm a pilot" or, you're part of the crowd whose response is generally "I'd love to but the wife/kids want to [insert something gay here]" whenever you ask them what they're doing on the weekend.


Responsible, intelligent, single, 20 - 30 somethings are generally elusive
