so I saw an old thread about neti pots, and a few people seemed to think these work really wellI'm sure you're supposed to use them regularly to get any relief (or are you? I don't really know)but it seems like some people got immediate relief, saying that they could see immediate results with stuff coming out for me it seems like my allergies just flare up even more after using it, and I don't notice much of a differencedoes that happen for anyone else? or does it seem to effectively work for you?maybe my sinuses are so stopped up that it's not really effective

it works a lot better if you use vodka

i use one of the bottle ones... it basically helps me to feel less stuffed up immediately after use. one of the better purchases i've made.

With me, it usually makes my sinuses/nose feel better within a few minutes of using it. However, once I was out of distilled water so I used cooled, boiled water instead. That actually made my sinus membranes swell up even worse. Are you using distilled water?

^I use warm (should I use hotter water?) water with the formula that came with the neti pot (it's called sinus rinse on the packet)

I <3<3<3 my Neti Pot. I <3 the bottle even more.I get immediate relief with both of them. I use warm tap water and the sinus rinse packets you buy in the store. I have nothing but positive things to say about it. I don't know why you're having trouble. Sometimes I have to adjust the water temp and the solution concentration, but it always brings me relief.

yea, you want to use the sinus rinse stuff. It's ph=7 if you use one packet. If they're really bad I'll use 2 packets and do it in the shower. I usually get immediate relief, with like-new status after 3-4 uses. When things first fire up in the spring time I'll use it 2 times per day for a week or so, then knock it back to just when I shower, and then again to just when needed.Honestly it works great the first use - but it's the continued usage that really keeps things under control. All the studies I've seen on it say that a nasal rinse with salt once per day is just as effective as 90% of the allergy medicine. Of course if I mow the grass or something I may have to do it extra, but it's good enough that I used to take allergy medicine 2x daily and now only when needed. 90 pill bottle lasts about a year.

Don't need the neti pot. I just use a sports-top water bottle: fits into the nasal passage, can use a couple times then recycle, adding powder and water is easily mixed by just closing cap and shaking it. I also mix my own: 1/4 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp baking soda, 1+ cup of water. THe baking soda helps get the pH right so the stinging is limited.

Fumbler uses the little squirt bottle thing and the rinse packets and says it helps. we think he's got a lot of scar tissue in his sinuses but it does clear him out pretty good. you have to do it regularly i think.

I want to try this but someone told me that it hurts like a motherfucker the first time you do it.
9/21/2009 9:16:47 AM
It shouldn't hurt if you're doing it correctly. The temperature of the water is pretty important (too hot or too cold is uncomfortable), you should use the right solution (just buy the packets), and you have to know how to tip your head 'just so' in order for the water to flow out the other nostril.

^have you ever used it?at first I found the idea to be preposterousbut it works rather easily and is pretty cool

^iodized salt will jack you up - use the ph balanced stuff in packets. Most likely their problem. Only make that mistake once then you go buy more of the little packets.[Edited on September 22, 2009 at 2:03 AM. Reason : ^]
