So the other night, we were outside and heard a growl/caterwauling sound that sounded too large to be a normal housecat. My cat ran outside before I could catch her when she heard the noise and ran after whatever made the noise. She was hurt very badly and, though we took her to the vet, she died. We were not able to see what made the noise, but I was talking to my neighbors about it today. Apparently, two of my neighbors have seen a very large cat with a long tail out in the woods near their houses.

Any ideas on what the cat could be? I know bobcats have been seen around here, but they usually don't have long tails. I'm not really sure on what larger cats are native to the area.

Well Coyotes are known for killing cats and do live around people pretty successfully. Could have been a bobcat if you were far enough out in the country.

like has been previously mentioned, we still have bobcats (and you don't have to be as rural as some would think to see one) and we did have mt lions in the past but most ecologists will say we no longer have them around here (i've never seen one so I am not the best judge to tell ya if we do or don't anymore)

there's also a fair number of coyotes down east. not sure about wake county, though. they got introduced by fox hunters who used them in their dog packs.

we supposedly have them here in wake county- there have been reports over near centennial campus (like north shore) siting them in the area... once again though, I've never personally seen them. Only shit I see out there that is "out of the ordinary" are deer

There are plenty of bobcats around here. My uncle hunts them when they are in season. He shot one behind his house in Willow Spring one time.

Also, there are plenty of coyotes around wake/johnston and surrounding counties.

There have always been rumor sitings of cougars in NC. NCWRC will tell you that they are extinct, but it is in the rule books that you can't shoot one. Some claim that NCWRC released cougars to control the deer population. I don't really believe that either. In the hunting community, I 've heard a fair amount of guys talk about seeing, but I don't know if I believe them. I've also talked to a farmer who had sheep dissapearing and found a carcass laying over a branch up in a tree. What could have done that? IDK

Everyone I have talked to seems to think it was either a bobcat, cougar, or an exotic animal that has gotten loose. We do live pretty far out in the country on a dirt road. One of my neighbors is friends with people that have a farm about 2-3 miles from our neighborhood. She said that her friend has been having ducks/chickens disappearing like crazy. Whatever is taking them has to climb a 6-foot chicken wire enclosure and leaves no feathers behind.

i grew up 45 minutes from raleigh and we had bobcats where i lived...i saw one only once, but heard them on multiple occasions

also, saw a black bear and two cubs on the way to school one day when i was in high school
