for some reason, i cringe at the thought of going to a pawn shop rather than selling on CL or ebay or something, but i have crap that i want to get rid of quickly

the biggest (well, smallest in terms of size) is an engagement ring that i've had for years (i didn't buy it for anyone in particular...an acquaintance of mine at the time made the ill-conceived decision to propose to his short-term girlfriend, she said no, and moved away...he needed money, wouldn't let me loan it to him, but i bought the ring for a fraction of its appraisal)...it's ugly as balls and i suspect a pawn shop will give me several times over what i paid for it, and that's all i'm really looking for

so, any "reputable" pawn shops y'all know about? which ones might pay a bit better? some that specialize in jewelry?

Just sell it to the dude on Hillsborough with the pawn shop

Or you could try the consignment shop in Five Points. That place is actually pretty classy but you wouldn't get your cash until the ring got sold.

Another option is finding a jewelry store that sells used jewelry. No reason they shouldn't let you put the ring towards the cost of something you're buying in the store.

I wouldn't assume that a pawn shop is gonna pay you several times what it's worth.

But Reliable Loan downtown is supposed to be the shiz. 307 S. Wilmington St.

That's what I meant to say.

You paid a fraction. They pay a fraction.

Obviously, I don't know squat about what you paid or what it's worth or anything, but I'm just saying that I think you're more likely to get what you paid, roughly, than to get a lot more than that.

I don't know anything about pawn shops, but I know you can consign it. Joint Venture is reputable and the people are really friendly.

http://www.jointventurejewelry.com/jewelry-services/jewelry-consignment.php

It's not guaranteed to be quick, but it is less sketchy.

it's 5 diamonds, with the center being largest and the two on either side of a slightly smaller weight...i believe it's 2tw or so...not very big

it's UGLY

If you're near Charlotte, try American Jewelery and Loan on South Blvd

They gave us over 800 for a bunch of what we thought was worthless jewelry a few years back

i'm pretty sure it's only 14k, so the gold isn't really the value...for as ugly as the ring and diamonds are, the diamonds are of pretty high quality

It all depends on how bad you want the money. If you don't need it all that bad I would just post it up on cl. If you need it rally bad your gonna let it go for crack head prices. Don't let anyone lowball you on it thought.
Ill give you €3.50 for the ring.

i figured i'd check out a pawn shop, some consignment shops, and a jeweler (in trade for new merchandise) to get an idea of what it's "worth" (i know what it's appraised for, but that's not really valid in terms of what i'd get for it)...then post it on CL...give it a few weeks and deal with the boatloads of spam and see what happens

thanks for all of the suggestions thus far

not going to read everything but a pawn shop is only going to pay you for the gold. They could care less about the diamond so i doubt you will get what you are expecting. You would be better going to a reputable jewler and seeing what they will offer

I would sell it on eBay. I sold an engagement ring on eBay and got pretty damn near what I still owed on it, which was MUCH more than I would have gotten at a pawn shop.

savvy people go to pwn shops to buy stuff, not to sell it--unless you need money right now

^^ also, get it appraised and include a copy of the appraisal in the eBay listing.

"why do they only pay for the gold?"

the chick at the one i stopped at on my lunch said that they only pay for diamonds that are 1/2 carat or more (not total weight, but each one has to be that large) and only the center stone is large enough (so they'd ignore the other 4, which are close, but not 1/2 carat)...not actually sure WHY they do that, though...too hard to sell diamonds? too much liability? big diamonds have serial numbers and small ones don't? beats me.

i debated it...but who wants to buy an engagement ring sight unseen? I guess i didn't think it would work because i, personally, wouldn't do it

i don't NEED the money at all...i just don't care...i've had it for 6 or 7 years now and i was only holding onto it this long in case my friend wanted it back (it was a family piece, but his family is crap and it would have been sold for crack ages ago)...he said he didn't care, so i decided i'd get rid of it...if i break even, that's fine, too

i need to find the damn thing...i have two separate appraisals, but i don't know where they are since i moved
