Who had one growing up?

I had (actually still have in my parent's attic) the Samantha doll. Had a bunch of the dresses for her (including her pinafore dress) and her Victorian school desk. I'm sure there's a bunch more stuff that my parents bought that I'm just blanking on.

They still sell AG dolls but they are not so much "historical" anymore but more "hip" like rockstars or cheerleaders.

Let's have a TWW American Girl PlayDate

I had one! I totally ordered mine to look like me though haha.

Couple this with the fact that I named my baby doll after me and apparently I thought I was the shit when I was younger.

i had samantha & felicity, back when they only had like 5 different versions & felicity was new. they're in boxes in my closet b/c the attic will kill them. i had to send samantha back to the hospital one time b/c my brother pulled some of her hair out, but she came back in a little hospital gown with a bracelet & whatnot. it was awesome.

i lost interest in them about when they started with the ones you can order to look like you. god i'm so old.

I have Molly, Josephina, and one I made to look like my favorite cousin, lol. Those bitches were expensive....apparently they recently "retired" Molly...just a selling ploy, imo. They still come out with a new historical doll, every so often, but mainly the look-alikes are where it's at apparently, lol.

the lady that started making these dolls is SUPER rich now (after selling the name to Mattel), and has caused quite a controversy by throwing her money around:

Quote :
"Billionaire developer Pleasant Rowland then fully gutted the remarkably intact 1833 Aurora Inn and altered all of its historic exterior. Her project, opposed by the State Historic Preservation Office, also demolished an adjacent 1929 store in order to build a large incompatible addition to her phony "ye olde" inn.

Degradation of Aurora's National Register Historic District continued with the gutting and radical alteration of more buildings. Our local government failed to require Environmental Impact Studies or Section 106 Reviews for her projects, and many negative results arose from her segmented development: destruction of historic architecture, devastation of archeological sites, loss of public recreational space, elimination of local businesses, loss of parking space, development of dangerous traffic patterns, obliteration of local gathering places, corrosion of community identity, etc."

aha she can't afford both a belt and a headband

love that they include the panties color

that's expensive for a homeless kid

She is homeless. A homeless doll.

In the history books that come with every American Girl doll -- bringing to life these little monsters until impressionable little ones believe they are actual people -- you learn that Gwen's father walked out on the family. Her mother lost her job. "

I got Molly because she looked like me (I wore my hair in braids and had glasses) when I really wanted Felicity.

She's sitting in my hope chest.

I had all the books (Molly, Felicity, Samantha, Kirsten at least: I guess they were Addy around that time too), and my sister had a Samantha doll

Yeah, they barely have any of the original American Girls anymore. The two girls I used to babysit never even heard of Felicity...and she was even a "new" one when I got her.

so, homelessness is something we want people to idolize?

#1: I dont see even younger girls going the "less money" route out of choice. maybe in SF a lesbian couple will force their adopted son to play with it... but even then
#2: #1

damn felicity was my first american girl doll

i bought her with my own money!

then i got samantha for christmas one year

samantha is much better taken care of than felicity. felicity needs a new head cause her hair is nappy. remember you used to be able to order specific body parts. but i don't want to do that cause if i give them to my daughters i want them to be loved. i just wish i had never taken her hair out of the pony tail it came in!

I have Felicity

Ever since Mattel bought out the American Girls Company it's gone to shit.

Had all the books too up to Addy. And the American Girls Cookbook. That book actually has some pretty dank recipes in it

I also got the American Girl magazine and all those fun books. I remember specifically The Care and Keeping of You. First picture of boobs I saw, and they were cartoons.

I loved being an American Girl. All my friends and I would take all the little quizzes in the books and Mags.

The magazine came out well after I stopped being interested. I just remember getting the catalogs and wishing my parents would buy me the stuff but they never did. It was always my grandmother that would hook me up

Man it makes me feel old that Felicity was new when I was into this stuff and now they've gotten rid of her

i have felicity, samantha, and one that looks like me. i also had a bunch of american girl clothes (for myself) and luggage and stuff. the coolest thing i had was the bunk beds and computer for the doll that looked like me. oh and i had a little violin for one of them and a mini paint set. american girl stuff is all anyone in my family ever got me for christmas, it was ridiculous. when i was 15 and still getting doll clothes for christmas i finally had to be like, "stop! this is getting out of hand" i never even "played" with those dolls, they just sat around until i finally boxed them up. i always thought the "bitty baby" dolls (or whatever they were called) were cute.

I must say, I was completely hooked on these cute little dolls. First, I had Molly, and I remember one time when the Wellington Bookstore in Cary had an event where were to bring your American girl doll & dress like her. It was so much fun! I wore glasses & did my hair in pigtail braids just to look like her. haha.

I also had Samantha, Kirsten, and Addy. I had so much fun playing with the dolls because when I was younger, I always played "teacher" and would set up their desks (the ones from the catalog) and have it all like a classroom. haha. My favorite was Samantha's tea set. I don't have them out on display currently, but I would like to do that when I buy a house one day.

I had Samantha, too!!! (SURPRISE.) And I had a custom one from the modern dolls.

My fave set for Samantha was the picnic one (I think it was a picnic one, or her lunch box) and her little art set. I also liked my luau party set for my modern doll.

haha. that's actually a cute idea.

I always wished I had made the one that looked like me...but to be honest, Molly & Samantha kind of did already! Well, at least close enough to make me feel like I had a doll like me...but I should've bought them more "modern" clothes that I would wear.

Anyone been to the American Girl store?! Omg, freak out! I went the one in Chicago and about ran around like a mad woman.
