anyone think these things are actually accurate?

ive been using http://www.bestplaces.net/COL/

they seem to think 70k in cary should translate to ~115k in the silicon valley/SF bay area due to higher cost of living

that conversion seems a little high to me

Haha, my salary in San Francisco (which I barely built up any savings with) would be essentially over $100,000 here... yikes.

yes that seems right

rent for a shitty studio apartment in a shitty area of brooklyn in a shitty building is 900 bucks.

What's confusing?

I don't live in CA anymore, but I did in Walnut Creek for three years. My San Francisco salary (even though I ended up having my office moved to San Ramon) would end up being over $100,000 if you accounted for cost of living here*.

If you're actually confused don't even think about it as salary. $100,000 in Raleigh can get you what $60,000 can in San Francisco.

^^ gotcha.

- A 1 BR apartment not even in the actual city but in a safe place, will run you upwards of $1200 minimum. Housing costs are pretty much 250% of what you'd find here at least.

- I paid 3 times as much for car insurance.

- Simple things like food and beer run you much higher (though if you move become a BevMo member and also get everyday wine from TJs -- legit $2 chuck).

- Salaries, even entry level, are MUCH, MUCH higher. But good like finding a job in the current job market out there.

**** As an aside, living in the Bay Area was awesome. I HIGHLY recommend moving there at least for a little while if it makes sense/you can afford it. I went out there solely for a short term job and graduate school.

Where I lived it was 45 mins to the Pacific Ocean, 45 minutes to both Napa/Sonama and Livermore wine country, 2.5 hours to Tahoe, 1 hour to Sacramento, 3-4 hours to Yellowstone and 5.5 hours to Los Angeles. In other words, there is TONS of stuff to do if you like taking day or long weekend trips.

(if you have any specific questions, just PM me -- I lived in Walnut Creek, worked in San Ramon/San Francisco/San Jose and went to grad school near Sacramento)

New York is the closest cost of living wise to where I live now and:

Quote :
"A salary of $45,000 in New York, New York could decrease to $28,931 in Raleigh, North Carolina"

I don't know what a living calculator costs, but I can imagine that it is rather expensive.

I can verify that it's pretty wrong when comparing Baltimore and Raleigh ... seems to think that Raleigh is more expensive...

I tried to use the COL calculator to negotiate a raise for myself when the office told me they wanted me to transfer to the NYC office. Sadly, they didn't appreciate my logic. Something about needing to give me a 65% plus raise didn't really appeal to them. oops?

problem with this thing is its based on averages. I pay 200 dollars less than what my friend pays in maimi beach for the same sq ft. yet the calculator says mb is 1819% more.

In baltimore, theres huge areas where housing is ~free because its so ghetto while raleigh has almost no ghetto area that bad.

What are the best COL calculators out there?

Some of these are just wacky as fuck, and they're all over the place with their estimates.
