Dude, to go to State, you probably had to take the SAT or ACT or some shit.

The GRE is just like that.

I'm not saying it's easy, but you've done it before...now just study, practice, and do it again.

It's no new OMG thing, and that perception is what prevents people from going for shit.

What are you looking to go to grad school for?

I'm glad I didn't have to take this.

Seriously, download the free powerprep software.

http://www.ets.org/portal/site/ets/menuitem.1488512ecfd5b8849a77b13bc3921509/?vgnextoid=302b66f22c6a5010VgnVCM10000022f95190RCRD&vgnextchannel=d687e3b5f64f4010VgnVCM10000022f95190RCRD

That's the only studying I did for the thing. There are 2 practice exams which are exactly like the real thing. Presented and graded the same (no essay though obviously).

I actually scored better on the real one than the practice ones

I actually feel pretty comfortable about it and did pretty well on the practice test.

My 2 worries are:

-The antonyms will kill me because there are so many words I keep coming across that I don't know, and you can't exactly cram in thousands of vocab words
-The issues essay will be a topic (you get 2 to choose from though) that I am not familiar with. I am a good writer, and I know I could easily get a 5 or a 6 with a topic I am familiar with, but if it's something that I can't think of much for, I'm doomed.

I'm taking the GRE Thursday. Not too worried about it. I took the Kaplan prep progam and it was actually really helpful. I never did anything GRE related before it but my score did go up and their strategies do make sense, mostly about time management and making educated guesses when you don't know the word or whatever. Bottom line is it keeps you studying a few days a week.

As of recently I Just went over old high school math (mostly geometry, arithmetic, and some algebra) but for the verbal part I got the Kaplan GRE Vocab in a Box and memorized all 500 words. Also got some free app for my iphone to memorize a couple hundred more words when I was bored or waiting around somewhere.

haha I sound like a Kaplan rep but you'll do fine, even if you studied more/less than I did. and hell, if not, you can retake it next month, and the one after that if you'd like.

Good point. I should pay $150 to take a test that is completely unnecessary for my future plans.

I took it last Wednesday...glad I'll never have to waste 4 hours of my life again. I score about 100 points higher in each section on the real thing than I did on one of the Powerprep tests.

Yeah, I think that was pretty much it...I didn't know any of the math, so I don't know how I pulled that shit off. But, anyway, best of luck!!

I have completely forgotten the math that comes up in the prep questions

And they don't let you use a calculator either do they?

No calculator.

The Kaplan book has been very helpful in refreshing me on the math. I feel like the verbal and writing though is pretty much either you know it or you don't.

I took it a couple years ago. I did zero prep for it. I was surprised to find out that I had to write an essay at all.
Scored a 1350 or 1380 on it. Didn't do too well on the essays though. I think 4s on both of them (1 is good 6 is bad).

I didn't even do the essay.

It wasn't required for my program.

I got the score I needed because my math was almost perfect.

The vocab is insane and not even fair. I didn't know ANY of the words, or ANY of the possible answers. It was pathetic.

[Edited on October 27, 2009 at 11:49 PM. Reason : had never seeen ANY and the words in PREP were EASY. so much bs...]

I took this twice a few years ago before applying for grad school. It still makes me angry to think schools take this into consideration when it has nothing to do with my major, although I understand they have to have some kind of system in place if there's a lot of applicants. I did score a 5.5 on writing though...which schools probably don't care about.

I will be taking this in the near future. If it's anything like the SAT, I'll steamroll it.

I assume most people here are old enough that they took the SAT when it was still on a 1600 scale

Rule of thumb...subtract 100 points from your SAT and thats probably what you'll get on the GRE

You tend to take less memory-intensive course in college and retain less 'common knowledge' that is so prevalent on the test
