more often than not its a situation the nerd created:

-girl asks for help
-girl acts completely normally, maybe flirtatious but totally innocent
-nerd overreacts
-nerd obsesses over girl
-girl brushes it off
-nerd doesnt take the hint
-girl has to be a bitch to get it across that she isn't into him
-nerd complains that he got used

when really if the nerd never overreacted and obsessed about the girl he might have had a hot female friend (always a good thing for a freshman) and may possibly have had a chance (this depends a lot on how nerdy he is though)

If this help takes more than 15 minutes, some sort of reciprocation should be expected, even if it's just cooking/buying a meal or a couple of beers.

false, people who know how to interact normally often help each other out. its part of a normal social contract that does usually not involve a quid-pro-quo arrangement for sexual favors.

I'd help someone out if it didn't take a long time, or if it was an already established friendship instead of someone just coming up to me when he/she had a problem and never planning on speaking to me again.


I'd have no problem hooking up someone's computer or helping them get on the network, something that can be done in a few minutes. But I'm not going to spend an hour or more trying to fix someone's computer or teaching them to do something without getting something back, even if it's just a couple of beers

kindness doesn't require reciprocation; it's an excellent turn when someone does something big for you like help to move, but even then...it isn't really warranted.
