At a court hearing over the weekend in Phoenix, county prosecutor Stephanie Low told a judge that Almaleki admitted to committing the crime. "By his own admission, this was an intentional act and the reason was that his daughter had brought shame on him and his family," Low said. "This was an attempt at an honor killing." Family members had told police that Almaleki attacked his daughter because he believed she had become too Westernized and was not living according to his traditional Iraqi values. Almaleki, wearing a jail uniform, said only his name and birth date during the hearing. He has declined requests to be interviewed. Almaleki had faced charges of aggravated assault, but Peoria police spokesman Mike Tellef said the charges will be upgraded in light of Noor Faleh Almaleki's death. Police said the Almalekis moved to Peoria from Iraq in the mid-1990s. "

Perhaps they think they can make money and live a better lifestyle in a western country but still somehow keep the rest of their family socially isolated from the rest of the world.

Shit, there's plenty of fundie christian families who try to do the very same thing with their kids. All the sex drugs and violence in pop culture surely won't be able to get into the puritanical minds of their children if they homeschool their kids and ration TV, games, and music!

I don't get that shit either. Such so called "honor killings" are rare in the US, but they happen not so infrequently among Muslim immigrants in the UK, Germany, and other European countries. And every time they happen, I ask myself the same question.

Oh, and if that was a son, he wouldn't have even been beaten up, let alone run over. Another ugly reality of most Muslims. (and of other societies as well)
