if your super awesome very cute amazing smart girlfriend was going to make you dinner as a "thank you" for visiting her and supporting her and her nutjob ways (she is a female, after all) what would you like her to make you? please to include appetizers, main dish, sides, beer, etc

yeah, they'd have told you some fancy recipe advice or something, and if you made it he would eat it an enjoy it some. But if you follow our advice your appreciation to work ratio will be way higher.

if you're gonna do a steak and you don't have a grill, pan sear it by alton brown's method. it's awesome.

broil it to his tastes...

basically:

watch it. turn it often. watch the edges to make sure they're not burning. listen to it to make sure the crackling of the steak isn't too sharp or loud.

5 - 20 minutes depending on how done you want the steak

Sorry, kadwhackle, I think I ruined this thread for you.

Personally I would want surf and turf, a baked potato, then maybe asparagus or possibly some kind of vegetable medley. Pie for desert.

Anything my woman cooks for me is awesome.

I do have a weakness for filet mignon, asparagus, loaded mashed potatoes.

Broiled salmon with dill is a big winner with me.

Any pasta dish, and Steph makes an awesome one. She also does an amazing spinach salad with balsamic vinaigrette and bacon.

Or on the simple country side, country style steak or meatloaf, squash, and butterbeans is a real meal that I really love.

But I am easy...the only thing I won't eat is stewed okra. She told me the other night that I'll know she's mad with me when she makes stewed okra. But I'd just sit there and force myself to eat it if she did, LOL.

Hmmm.... Friday night, eh?

I'd open with the boiled shrimp - fresh, not frozen. (boil in salt+cayenne pepper)
Come in with the fresh salad (Romaine+crouton+cheese+dressing)
Hit him with the thick-cut steak and potato (make it a sweet potato, with the brown sugar/butter combo)
Wrap it up with ice cream. Never eat the ice cream, just play with it - if you're getting the drift.

Sounds great to me anyway

no seafood? what a shame

steak and potatoes isn't bad... but to me, it's just all but extraordinary. the norm. beef + potatoes (tasty, but an everyday thing).

This sounds excellent, especially the caesar salad (my favorite actually). The reason so many people think that steak and potato is boring is because they've never had good beef. I mean this sincerely, and while this will come off as snooty as hell and make me sound like a food snob.... you almost cannot buy good beef in this state.

The difference between beef here vs. beef in say... Missouri, Iowa, Texas, etc. is the difference between seafood in Charleston vs. seafood in say... Missouri or Iowa.

false

I thoroughly enjoy a great cut of steak. I still think that beef is kind of the "standby" meat to cook.

How about a stuffed pork loin?

A good steak might be a standby to some, but some of us don't get to eat it nearly often enough. The last steaks I cooked were on the 4th of July.

I still think it's a great idea. And if you do the potatoes right, they're a huge treat. Go with it. RUN with it...your man won't be disappointed.

well damn- as long as it is filling and not some vegetarian type thing, it would be good... I don't know what yo man likes though, so I can't comment- I personally like things that have some sort of tomato or cream based things (ie: italian or mexican)
