My birthday is 12/21, so my lists always look horrible til you remember that until this year, they're a double list, for a large family, with a wide range of price points This year, I'm not bothering with a list for anyone but my mother.

the list I gave my mother (b/c she asked for a list in sept, since money is so tight for them: she wanted stuff she could make for $rhodeisland/free and needed time)

Quote :
"handtowels for the bathroom (simple. no need to go fancy: just cut up some of your older towels that are ragged around the edges, and hem them into hand towel size...that's good enoguh for me. We have plenty of dish towels and wash cloths)
return address labels/misc stationery
reed scented oil diffusers
I really want/need some rings and lids for the mason jars I have on hand
Some soup/stew/chili mixes to throw into the crockpot...these could be given in mason jars
a plain/light tablecloth or two - preferably oilcloth
napkin/silverware roll combo for camping - 2-4 people
rabbit hutch
sheath with belt clip for my knife (I don't know the exact blade dimensions. It's in my glovebox, if [sister] wants to surrepitiously take some measurements)
a blanket for me to keep in my car in winter - I gave mine away last year (side story: [why I no longer have mine])
collapsible bucket for washing dishes/carrying water when camping
tent stake flags/wire flags (reflective material is the key component)"

The list I gave my husband:
- braces

I haven't done a list for the rest of the family, nor will I.

Things that come to mind immediately if I were to make such a list:
- microplane zester
- another good set of 500 TC sheets
- new cordless phones for the house
- more chico bags
- another cigarette lighter power adapter for my ipod
- a kitchenaid mixer

i want a digital slr SOOOOO bad

especially since i'm traveling. but i'm too scared to ask my dad.

he suggested a new suitcase. i'm pretty sure suitcase and digital slr are NOT in the same price range.

plus if i got one i'd feel like a greedy spoiled brat. which, i guess maybe i am. not a lot, but just a little.

Dynomighty wallet
DCI I Am Not A Paper Cup
Shower radio
CHI flat iron
Tivo
Pair of TOMS
Some books and DVDs

Plus, the usual: pj pants, candles, candy, coffee, fluffy socks. I like to keep my list stocked with stuff that's available from Wal-Mart for cheap.

So when are we supposed to stop making X-MAS lists? I'm 25...I dunno...older folks of TWW, do you stop making lists at a certain age, or do you continue making the lists available to your elders until they're not able to shop anymore?

haha mine is not an official list. my mom doesn't really ask what i want anymore and she always shops well for me

i end up making a list of things i'm interested in buying or run across in some other way so when i want to treat myself or someone INSISTS that i tell them what i want for a birthday or christmas, i can give them a selection or just suggest something off of it

I want a Wii, but when I suggested it my mom told me they were "scaling back" this year.
I wanted to be like "ok, I'll just return that present I bought you that cost more than a Wii then", but I didn't have the balls.

Seriously how old are you people? How many of you still live with your parents?

v A Christmas list in your mind is one thing but giving it to parents/SO seems so 5 years old.

^&^^^^too cool for a christmas list?

-iPod adapter for my car (not that FM transmitter BS)
-driving shoes
-magnetic numbers for the car
-socket wrench tool set
-PS3 steering wheel (for forthcoming GT5)
-J.Crew jeans
-J.Crew/Gap shirts

[Edited on November 30, 2009 at 11:02 AM. Reason : never too old to give and receive presents]

[Edited on November 30, 2009 at 11:03 AM. Reason : Yeah, it's stupid to help give your family an idea of what (in particular) you'd want.]

well my whole family still exchanges gifts, and I'd rather get useful stuff, plus my mom asked for one. Also, being in grad school = poor. When I was working my list usually consisted of books and socks and small things like that if they asked.

^ipod adapter is also on my list but so far it doesn't look like my make and model car stereo can be adapted, which means if I really want one I'd have to get a whole new car stereo

If someone asks you for a wish list, you give it to them.

I learned my lesson about not doing so...even with a wishlist distributed to the family, I still get shit like mickey mouse makeup bags because my aunt went to disney world with her kids that year, and cop-out presents from bath and body works.

Up until last year, we all still exchanged gifts at christmas. I don't know about you, but if someone is going to spend money on me, I want them to know they're spending that money on something that I'll like/use/want/appreciate, and not on something that's going to be donated to goodwill/women's shelter/etc. Plus, it makes their life a lot easier sometimes

I have a wishlist... just a list of things I want to get. thus when people ask me what I want for holidays/birthdays, I refer to the list... is that such a difficult concept?

I really want the bonus room to be organized and be a great storage area, office, and hang out area for us. We could leave the bed there for when mom comes to visit.

I do have a list of shoes by Keen that I want but I could do without them. I want a put together bonus room more.

Sorry to sound like a bitch. Other than immediate fam (mom, dad, brother), my family has a no-gift policy. We do a white elephant gift exchange. And my folks make under 40k per year combined, so I ask them not to get me anything at all. We po'!

I suppose I'm somewhat out of touch with traditions.

i def dont distribute a list. i keep a wish list on amazon of shit i want to buy myself and if it happens to be a bday or xmas and someone demands to know what i want, i refer to the list

went shopping with mom today for a new suitcase for me. pretty sure my current suitcase (and xmas gift 6 years ago) has 100,000+ miles on it and i need a second large suitcase anyway. we found a sweet spinner samsonite at tjmaxx and i bargained 10% off because there was a scratch on it but i can't have that until i come back home for christmas

she also got me the espresso multi colored mugs i wanted from world market AND the matching coffee cups too (i was going to buy these for myself and my mom just paid for them and put it toward christmas bc she wants to buy me gifts i pick out and will use/want)

also the hallmark ornament i collect every year

and today i got all my shopping done and everything is wrapped too. damn it feels good to be done
