I can agree with this.

Honestly, obesity can be a detriment when trying to get a job. Sure, it's not legal to discriminate for jobs based on weight, but it happens. So I think the college is providing a great service to students by having physical fitness requirements.

The BMI issue is very interesting. Was glad to see there's an exception for those who are overly muscular.

Honestly, religion can be a detriment when trying to get a job. Sure, it's not legal to discriminate for jobs based on beliefs, but it happens. So I think the college is providing a great service to students by having re-education requirements.

The skin color issue is very interesting. Was glad to see there's an exception for those who aren't really african, just Dominican.

A traditionally all-black school thinks it's only logical to separate people based on what others think is needed for them and how they should be treated, in unequal and heavy-handed ways. That's not ironic at all.

EDIT: But of course, obesity is a huge obstacle in life, not just in how it affects your health. Obese persons are more likely to be discriminated against socially and professionally. It's a disadvantage that would be best avoided.

WAT?!?

I know BMI isn't the only health indicator... but this program is designed to help with weight control and according to that definition, if you're in the class, your ass is fat and therefore less healthy than others.

Well, this isn't the best health program, but I don't think it's all that bad either. I think a program similar to the following would be much better:

All students are required to take an active, frequently meeting, on campus PE each semester (no DE, no special PEs that meet 1-3 times/semester like skiing at NCSU, or bowling, etc.)

One or two of those PEs must focus on nutrition, weight training, aerobics, and other physical fitness topics.

For students not meeting a physical fitness requirement (such as BMI, etc), one PE each year must focus further on nutrition, weight loss, weight gain, etc. This would include those who are over and under (where applicable) the requirement (such as being underweight, according to published standards).

Of course there would need to be some tolerance on a BMI requirement, as the BMI scale is often a joke, and other requirements. There would also need to be an appeals process for those that do not meet the requirements due to body type/form, but feel they are in good health. This process could include physical fitness measures such as the BMI, skinfold tests, physical ability testing, heart rates, blood pressure, etc.

I know my fatass would be in that class if NCSU had it... and I don't think I'd mind. However, I'd much rather see (and experience) what I outlined above.

The dubious scientific nature of BMI notwithstanding, if you're obese in college someone needs to sit your ass down and tell you that you won't get hired and will die early. Any company that hires a fat person is willingly raising their insurance premiums. Is their worth as an employee equal to what you'll have to pay when they have their first heart attack in less than 10 years?

They should still require the swim test and first aid too, if you ask me.

I don't have a problem with this graduation requirement. I do, however, disagree with how it is being applied. It would be far less discriminatory to have a rigorous PE requirement that did not use body measurements to pass a student, but used performance. Then those who are physically fit (regardless of body shape or size) could test out of the class and those who are not should take the class. It's pretty much what schools have been doing for years and far less inflammatory.

I also think that the thought behind the graduation requirement is a bit problematic. If you force students to take a class on whatever you perceive to be a hindrance to their success, you may not ever have a single graduate. Can't you just see every homosexual, unwed mother, bad dresser, and gosh knows who else sitting in some kind of class meant to correct their "problem?"

Wouldn't this be like if NCSU had a place-out for the PE course requirements? I don't see why they don't just require 2 semesters of PE.

i went to a college where knowing how to swim was a graduation requirement. those who failed the test had to take a half semester-long swimming course and then pass the test.

People discriminate for superficial reasons all the time. No doubt weight discrimination happens in the work place. Just like ugly discrimination. We don't like to think about it, but it happens.

listen up fat bitch, you knew this school had this requirement, you chose to go here, - so shut up, take the class, learn something, and maybe you won't die of diabeetus/hypertension/heart disease at an early age

aaaaaaand it looks like HPR 101 (Wellness) is a gen ed requirement for all students, so it's not like fatties are the only ones having to take any kind of pe

i think all students everywhere should have to take some kind of wellness or general fitness class

i know all schools require pe but a lot of times it isn't sufficient. there are tons of "easy" PEs that someone can take and be totally out of shape

when i was at CofC i took a wellness class and physical fitness training and testing was part of it. i'm pretty sure you had to pass everything minimally to pass the class. you could keep doing it as many times as you wanted but you couldn't fail any part of it.

that skin pinch thing wasn't part of it. it was like the mile, sit and reach, sit ups, push ups, pull ups/chin hang....and i think that is it.

Yeah, it seems obvious to me that if they were interested in having physical fitness as a graduation requirement, they should have just done a physical fitness test.

Everybody takes the test (except folks with disabilities).

If you pass the test, you get your credit.

If you fail the test, you take the class and get your credit.

And I trust the school's cafeteria is stocked with nothing but healthy, tasty options...mac and cheese free.

i'm all for it.

that being said, i think it should be required of all students, not just the obese. being skinny in college does not always equate to having good eating habits overall.

i realize that i'm the exception in all this... but still. most overweight people are so because of their own actions. any efforts to try and remedy this have my full support.
