hmmmm...so, what type of wood are you using for your boat?
12/1/2009 3:26:48 PM
It's actually my mother-in-law's neighbor. He's been building boats all his life. This is the 5th or 6th 60+ foot sport fishing boat he's built completely by himself.I'm not sure what kind of wood it is.He builds the hulls and fiberglasses them and then sells them to whoever that will then upfit them. The hulls go for over a half million. He said most of them then sell for 1.75 - 2 million dollars once finished.

This was his first prototype. They've evolved a bit since then.I'm trying to find a pic or two of the finished products...This is one of his: http://www.pointrunner.com/ Their website sucks though.[Edited on December 1, 2009 at 4:07 PM. Reason : *]

kinda looks like a Hatteras
12/1/2009 4:07:20 PM
holy shit! i wonder how much he spends in material and how long it takes for him from start to finish? is it the same design over and over again or is each one custom?^ i think it looks more like a Viking Convertible[Edited on December 1, 2009 at 4:12 PM. Reason : .]
12/1/2009 4:08:16 PM
dude that is so friggin cool, I wish i could build something like that
12/1/2009 4:09:14 PM
He tweaks the design each time he does one. If he doesn't like exactly how the last one sat in the water and ran, he'll change it up some. I don't think any of them have been the same size though. Each time he'll do it a foot or two different to try to get it perfect. He usually starts working on one in the spring and has it finished before winter. He's behind schedule on this one because he was sick for almost two months in September/October.I believe he said he puts something like 50-60k in materials on each one, but I'm not sure.[Edited on December 1, 2009 at 4:13 PM. does he lay it all out in CAD first or just wing it? that's crazy awesome!!
12/1/2009 4:13:00 PM
He doesn't know how to use a computer at all... He's like 67. He does every bit of it from memory and intuition. No drawings or measurements. Here's another one of his:This one is called the Buck Wild. That one in the link up there is the Point Runner.
12/1/2009 4:14:24 PM
