HELPPPPP!!!

omg. i have not even had my dog for a week and she is hurt. i am the worst dog owner EVER!!

i don't exactly know what happened. we were outside and i was sitting at a table and she was on her retractable leash. she was laying in the grass in the sun just chilling. well all of a sudden maybe she saw a bird or a leaf blow but she got up and started running around the table tangling her leash in all the chairs

then she tried to come back towards me and a chair fell but it was tangled in one of the chairs pretty bad so the chair tipped over and when that happened she freaked and started running and the leash was all tangled around her too

i don't know if the chair hit her or not it all happened so fast. she chewed through her leash to get away from it.

once she got away she was LIMPING and she went and laid in the grass and i looked at her leg - she let me touch it and stuff but when she walks she either DOESN'T put any pressure on it or limps.

WHAT DO I DO?????? BF says wait until tomorrow because maybe she just pulled a muscle or something. but what if she broke it? how do i tell? i mean she will put a little pressure on it but not a lot and she will let me touch it. i don't know if these are good signs or not.

Somtimes it just hurts for a second and they limp on it because it just hurts bad. Just because they are limping doesn't mean they have broken it or anything. Just put some ice on it (with a wash cloth of course) and see how that does for a while. Give it 15 minutes or so. if she's still limping, see a vet.

My dog jumped in the air once, landed wrong, and must have twisted her foot. I freaked because she was limping for a second and whimpered for about 30 seconds. I got ice and I could move the leg without her moaning or resisting. After about 15 minutes, she started walking on it with a much smaller limp. I think she was fine after 30 minutes.

yeah id wait a few hours before taking her in. Dogs can limp for a few minutes and be fine after that if its just a bruise/awkward landing/twist. If she continues to limp/not put any pressure on it for a few hours then definitely take her in. Also if you notice lethargy or lack of attention and energy it could be a sign of serious pain.

If shes putting any pressure on it at all, its more than likely not broken. This has happened to my dogs a few times, they will run around so fast and end up straining a muscle. They are usually better within 24 hours, try not to let her walk on it too much. However, it could be a ligament injury of some kind, possibly a torn ACL. In the future unless you're in a completely open area, I would avoid using a retractable leash. A 4-5ft lead is good because you can maintain a lot better control over her. Let us know how it goes!

seriously, my dog limps like that pretty much weekly. if it's seriously injured, she will be limping for several days

lebron pulls muscles in his legs from time to time from jumping so much. damn thing jumps about 3-4x his height

he'll limp on it for two days or so and then he's right back on it.

we've never took him to the vet for it.

so yeah, like what a few other people said-no need to take her to the vet right away-especially if she lets you touch it and all.


im actually pretty surprised at how many people immediately said take her to the vet.
i generally do that as a last resort.
or if something is really, really wrong.

to explain the retractable leash - obviously not going to use that anymore (well she chewed through it anyway) but i'm not a moron (contrary to what many people in this thread appear to believe) - i don't want to just let her run free yet (even though it is an enclosed space) just because i JUST got her and i don't know what she'll be like off a leash. when i've been taking her out, i haven't given her full range of the retractable leash - i've kept it locked at a normal leash length. i have let her have full range of it occasionally to run a little bit and then i take her back in and its fine.

today she wanted to sit and lay down in the sun and i was like well if you're gonna sit i wanna sit so i took her over to the table and sat in a chair and let the leash out so she could walk around find a spot and lay down in the sun. but like i said, she saw something, got up to see, was tangled in a chair, it tipped over and then she went insane cause she was scared.

and i DID take her to the vet to make sure it wasn't broken. she is def in pain but as the vet says she's very stoic and barely even shows it - she could only tell because her pupils increased in size when she was doing the exam. poor baby won't even cry she THINKS it is a sprain/strain but if she isn't better in a few days she needs to go back for xrays. it is her wrist so if it isn't better in a few days, then a tiny bone could be fractured but they'd need to xray to tell obviously. so she has pain meds and she is restricted to just going outside to pee/poop. no playing for 5 days then "light" playing for 2 weeks.

but she said she didn't think the strain was bad enough to even splint it so that is good news.

this is how i usually am too with my cats, but i know them better since i've had them longer so it is easier to tell when something is really wrong. but this dog i've had for 5 days (yes, bad pet owner i get it) and i dunno her personality as well yet. i guess it is like a new baby or something and i was being overly cautious.


anyway thanks for all the legit responses and to everyone else - maybe i suck as a pet owner and made a mistake but i'm trying and at least she didn't go to the gas chamber!

but my buddies are doing great (except for carters autoimmune problems, but that is out of my realm )

everyone at the vet's office including the vet was obsessed with her

they weren't fawning over other dogs either. she got lots of treats and is probably going to be spoiled rotten by them!

she is SUCH a sweetie i feel so bad that she got hurt

and homegirl weighs 34lbs i found out. i did NOT realize she was that heavy. no wonder my back hurts from carrying her up the stairs

ps - my dog dislocated his kneecap one time when jumping around like a huge spaz. Freaked me right the fuck out because he never ever yelps or limps. Rushed right to the vet, they just told me to try to keep him calm and not to take him on long walks for a week or so.

i thought she might have dislocated something at first cause she was wearing a harness when it happened and i didn't know if she had hurt her shoulder or something, but the vet said she probably just hyper extended her wrist when she was trying to get away from the lawn chair and that i just need to keep her calm for awhile

my doggy weighs 34lbs. i wonder how big she will get. if she is a year hopefully not that much bigger (just maybe filling out and a little growing) but if she is 6months she could be a biggun!

i'd def be down for a tww dog meet up after doggy is done being sick and injured

she likes to bark at other dogs though (we need to work on that) and she also likes to lick them. not all doggies want to be licked though i found out today at the vet saw one of my friends from school there and his dog and my dog were making bff until my dog started licking the little chihuahua/pug mix on the head. little doggy didn't want to be licked!

but then she kissed a giant weimaraner named franklin and he appreciated the kisses more.
