They are clearly not singing about TRUE bbq... They are emphasizing the sauce in the song when everyone knows that in true eastern style nc bbq the whole hog pork is the major player and the sauce is background.

It's a bunch of Otter muppets playing in a jug band singing about their grandmother's cooking which RD happens to hate. Seriously, if these are not qualifications for greatness, I don't know what is.
