I've always felt like this was an awkward word to use in conversation. It is much more fitting, in my mind, when read. Something about it just doesn't sound right spoken off of the tongue. Does anybody else have any words they feel similar towards?

"Folk" comes from the german "volk".Following the Norman Conquest germanic words were relegated to the lower class as the government and ruling class exclusively used french. As such, many words like "folk" still have an extremely informal stigma attached to them.

In art class in high school we had a substitute teacher one day, who showed us a video on folk art and folk pottery. However she happened to be from Nigeria, or some other african country, and consequently had an accent, which affected how she pronounced the word "folk" among other things. This led to her standing in front of the class telling us we were going to watch a video on, what sounded to us like, "fuck art and fuck pottery."True Story.
