my parents have had one in the yard for about 8 years now and i'd say it's about big enough to bring inside. though come to think... i really don't know how big it was when they planted it[Edited on December 12, 2009 at 12:29 PM. Reason : ]

4 to 5 months for a nice tree like this lil guy....
12/12/2009 12:31:17 PM
When I get my own place I'm going to grow a christmas tree in my front yard so I can have it all year long and then when it's time to go christmas tree shopping and decorating I won't have to...I'll just decorate the one in my front yard...and I'll put all my presents around that...then on Christmas day my family and I will gather around that tree instead of having one inside.
12/12/2009 12:31:25 PM
yea that will be fun gathered all around the tree outside in the fuckass freezing cold
12/12/2009 12:33:28 PM
my hope was that it takes less than a year or so, that way i can just plant a seed at the start of the year and chop it down by christmasbut still i havent got an answer to my question
12/12/2009 12:40:01 PM
It will be, it will be a more hardcore Christmas than any of y'all have ever done. I'll probably start a trend. We will celebrate Christmas outside come wind rain sleet or snow. I guess we could probably put up a tent around the tree on Christmas eve in case it starts to rain or snow or sleet over night so the presents don't get ruined...probably have to put a watch dog or something out there to protect them, cause I'm gonna be the mom that gets her kids all the hottest toys of the year.^It will take longer than a year. have you ever gone to a tree farm?[Edited on December 12, 2009 at 12:41 PM. maybe you could just grow it in a pot in the exact spot where you put your tree every year. That way you'd basically have to do nothing, amirite?
12/12/2009 12:41:13 PM
yes b/c chit chat trolls are knowledgeable in the life cycles of christmas trees

12/12/2009 12:42:14 PM
It seriously will take around 10 years to grow one that is big enough especially if you're starting scratch

12/12/2009 12:46:26 PM
i think sawahash is serious about the watch dog shit. badass
12/12/2009 12:46:54 PM

I recommend if you are serious about it to plant one every year, so then 10 years from now you will have a cycle started to where you have 1 harvestable tree every year.[Edited on December 12, 2009 at 12:50 PM. Reason : a]

6 to 10 years? wtfby the way i have been to a tree farm in boone, i cant imagine how dedicating land for 6 or so years to grow some trees and sell for the price they do can be worth while
12/12/2009 12:51:51 PM
but it would be kind of neat to grow one in a pot then use that tree every year as it grows, first it will be small but it will grow every christmas,by the way if you cut a tree down, can you replant it?
12/12/2009 12:53:02 PM
i'm pretty sure the people down the street from my parents place who own one do it as a hobby rather than a legit business. plus it's like a christmas bonus and they can use all the cash for presents and shit every year.
12/12/2009 12:54:16 PM
Yes, you can replant a christmas tree. You just have to cut off a cm of trunk then put it back in the ground, it will respround roots within the week.
12/12/2009 12:54:27 PM
My GF is from Spruce Pine, which is the Christmas Tree capital of the southeast. And you're right, it takes serious dedication. But if you have the land, why not?
12/12/2009 12:54:43 PM
My family used to go up to Boone all the time to cut down our Christmas tree the day after thanksgiving for years. But we got tired of doing it...good tradition when you have younger kids, but when they are older it just turns into a pain in the ass to get them to wanna even wake up to go find a tree.
12/12/2009 12:55:50 PM
we got ours from her parents' neighbor this year. first year have had a live christmas tree since I was like 10can't beat getting a $100 christmas tree for free.[Edited on December 12, 2009 at 12:59 PM. Reason : a]

My dad and I have a fake tree at the house here...don't really like fake trees but it's only a 4 footer, it doesn't seem like we were trying. At our house in Hickory though we have a real one.

Yeah, the successful tree farmers are those that land contracts with big chains (Lowes, Food Lion, etc etc). If you operate a "cut your own" or small private lot, it's pretty tough to break even.
12/12/2009 1:09:29 PM
Christmas trees is a $$ industry, but you obviously have to have some capital to work with, because you won't see any profits for 8 years or so, while still having to own a bunch of land and pay people (normally mexicans) to work for you every year even before you start harvesting. There are tons of tree farms here in Alleghany (and in Ashe where I'm at part of the time), it's easily the biggest cash crop in each county.
