In Atlanta, the EMTs might have stolen her purse.

In Alabama or Mississippi, They'd have probably got a seat up close to eat their bagels and watch a black woman die.

In Florida, some predator would have sprinted out of the bagel shop and kidnapped her 3 year old.

Here in the Triangle, yeah, this probably would not have happened (not that other fucked up shit doesn't happen).

im not condoning what they did but there are instances where bystanders who are either nurses/good samaritans who have helped people and gotten sued over it because the person ended up not making it or were paralyzed etc etc etc


Still think they could have done something, even if it was just keeping her awake. Their attitude about the whole thing doesnt seem right to me

well, at one place I worked, we were instructed to never, under any circumstances, to provide medical aid to those in need. no ifs, ands, or buts. if you did, you could be terminated as well as sued by the person you helped.

I'm not saying this is the case here, but this type of policy and attitude, and those that are similar, tend to breed workers that won't help and are apathetic to others needs.

i think this is the crux of the situation. They were off the clock and didnt have the equipment needed. I am sure union rules played a part. I am sure they WANTED to do something, but were restricted from helping. Because they were at work, but off the clock........if they had rendered aid they would NOT have been covered by the good samaritan act, nor would they be covered by FDNY's malpractice insurance. The two men may not have their own personal malpractice insurance.

Without ativan there isnt much any bystander can do for a seizing person except turn them on their side and keep them from hitting nearby objects. Current standard of practice is to NOT insert anything into the mouth of an actively seizing person. Once a person is post-ictal THEN you can attempt to secure an airway. Also without an active 911 call to which they were dispatched, they cannot administer any medications!!! they would not be covered by the EMS protocols. Any administration of medications would be considered prescribing medication which is NOT in the EMS scope of practice. It would definitely result in the loss of their certificates to practice.


I am sure they felt bad and helpless, but they were caught between a rock and hard place.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the EMTs did nothing due to liability reasons, which is messed up but it's not on them, it's on the ridiculous lawsuit happy culture we live in.

Even so, I don't see anything wrong with people not wanting to do work while they're on their break. People die every day, get over it.
