I have a conflict at work, one of our engineers doesn't believe in dinosaurs, which is ok, he might be highly religious. But he also doesn't believe we landed on the moon. this is unacceptable, and I need peer reviewed, easy to understand evidence of both. Help me out TWW!!

or should I just ignore it and not try to start anything. I hold intellectual integrity above most other things, so this really bugs me.

i think dinosaurs are more plausible than the moon landing

so i'd start with those

how can you say it is ok that he doesn't believe in dinosaurs on account of religion? that is just stupid.

Pictures of apollo mission hardware/other stuff taken by the recently launched Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/LRO/multimedia/lroimages/apollosites.html

If he doesn’t believe we’ve sent stuff to space, this would be an issue.

Also, what kind of engineer is this anyway?

And what does he think of dinosaur bones?

i give a shit because he said this stuff out loud. He is in a position of power, and I believe that anyone in any kind of influential position should be held to higher standards of scrutiny when it comes to 'facts' they espouse.

if it's not related to your job, it's really not worth it. do you have a specific need to piss off a superior, just to make a point?

he's not a superior, and my intention is not to piss him off. I want to inform him, or at the very least, allow him to question his beliefs

http://www.apolloarchive.com/

Hundreds of thousands of photographs, videos, and audio recordings of every Apollo mission.

It's also worth noting that the Apollo program employed 400000 people including the many private contractors that designed various equipment. Many are now dead, most are retired...lots of the engineers ended up having to get divorces from the deadline pressures. Anyway, these are 400000 very real people that worked extremely hard on their particular widget...hardly a mere film crew in a soundstage.

But if he doesn't believe all that...well who gives a shit?

http://lasers.jpl.nasa.gov/PAPERS/OTHER/131d.pdf

A paper on determining the moon’s distance using the retroreflectors that were dropped there during the mission.

And realistically, if he’s gone this long as an engineer and still doesn’t believe the moon landing or dinosaurs, lack of information is not his problem, being an idiot is. It’s likely whatever dumb ideology that is driving his delusions will just cause him to come up with some other excuse for why those things aren’t real. Your best avenue to change his mind is to attack the ideology.

The man lives in a 1st world country in the 21st century. He is surrounded by evidence for both of these things. No doubt he has "evidence" backing up what he believes. Nothing you say is going to convince him. You are wasting your time and jeopardizing your work situation. Or you're being trolled in real life. Also possible.

Bird's eye view: because modern dinosaurs are flying all around us, examining them closely can offer new insights into the lives of their fossilized ancestors:

Motherfucker I started back to school in May.

And I also doubt he's trolling, but frankly I think that's more likely than you convincing him that the weird-ass beliefs he's spent years defending are wrong.

I'm not sure if I believe in dinosaurs, myself...i.e. I'm not sure if I believe there was ever a time when dinosaurs walked the earth in the same way that human beings do now

reason for this is I'm not sure if I believe the world has ever existed outside of human consciousness

just throwing this out there

the moon landing, however, is a different matter

For the user tag to work you have to type the user's actual name. But yeah, back at NCSU. It was the best choice to go back to the same place I did my undergrad the only place whose deadline hadn't expired by the time I wanted to apply.

If he's skeptical enough about the world to not believe in the moon landing then he's not going to believe anything you can show him. People like this think that scientists designed all these dinosaurs and fabricated the fake fossils just to try to harm religion, they will easily think any video or photo evidence of the Apollo missions is fake as well.

this would be my concern

for this kind of person, they would interpret your attempts at “educating” them as an offensive maneuver, and only become galvanized in their beliefs.

And some people just take on views to be controversial or gain notoriety or acceptance.

A good shaming by their peers could snap him out of it. Even horses don't like to be ostracized.
