yeah we don't get christmas eve or new years eve off either unless we use vacation time. luckily my company gives me 6 weeks of paid time off a year and i can roll over for up to 14 months from the accrual date.

Yea, first day of my 12 day vacation! Gotta love working for a school district.

But at my last two jobs (rental cars and retail) it was like pulling teeth to get any time off around holidays. You'd get the holiday itself off, but you had to be open the day before and after. With little kids, that gets old.
