Okay, so I got two copies of a PS3 game for Christmas. What are my chances of getting store credit without a gift receipt at Target? I know I could just do it at Wal-Mart, but I fucking hate Wal-Mart and prefer avoiding it.

Not to derail - but you can take something without a receipt to Wal-Mart? I have some Planet Earth DVD's I never opened and would rather have the Blu-Ray version...

Why wouldn't you exchange it at Best Buy? Target is notoriously bad for exchanges without receipts.

I returned a DVD to Target last night without a receipt. I did have the credit card, though.

I've seen people take back shit to Wal-mart that...

a) Wal-mart didn't even sell

b) was completely beat up and worn out

Yep, I was in line behind one woman who returned a toaster with a piece of bread still in it at Walmart.

Target though has been doing this new thing where you can only do two returns per year without a receipt. I'm not sure if that's every Target, or the salesperson was just cranky that day.

I found a Carolina Panthers shirt that was too big for me that I had gotten as a gift a few years ago. Still had the tags on it so I took it over to Dick's (no idea where it was from) to see if I could return it.

Sure enough, they scanned it and gave me store credit for it. Sweetness.

I will have to try taking something back to Wal-Mart though, thanks for the information.

i *think* some stores have rules that only allow you to return a set limit of items w/o a receipt. i thought walmart & target had those restrictions but i'm not sure.

ha, found something
Quote :
"Target now allows gifts to be exchanged without a receipt, as long as the total of such unreceipted returns does not exceed $70 in a year. Merchandise can also be exchanged without a receipt for something else in the same department of equal or greater value.

Walmart: In the event that a customer has returned more than three items without receipts within a 45-day period, the cash register system will automatically flag the transaction, and a customer service manager or member of management must approve the return. These cash register messages will remain for six months and will disappear if there are no more returns during that time period."

Best Buy has a similar limit on returns without receipt, but it's been so long since I worked there that I don't remember the exact limits.

Just did it at Target with absolutely no hassle. Exchanged Uncharted 2 for Call of Duty: MW2 and somehow got $12 or so back on a giftcard as well.

I haven't had time to start it yet. Between Black Friday deals and Christmas, I've had more games of late than I've had time to play.

I returned something to JC Penny yesterday with a gift receipt and they wouldn't give me cash. Kinda irked me, but I had to use the credit + $12 of my own money to buy some overpriced Levis that would have cost half as much at Marshals.

I couldn't find any shirt brands I liked there, so I felt like it was either a new jacket (which I have closets full of already), some Dockers for work, or some Levis. Seems like it's a store full of Arizona and St. Johns Bay stuff. I admittedly haven't been there in years, but I thought they'd at least have some nicer stuff.

^^I think a gift receipt is just to ensure that you get the full value of what someone paid for your gift, rather than the current price of the item.

It's just a lame cop-out.
If she came back in they would give her a full refund; applied to her credit card.
But, since I don't have the credit card that was used to purchase the item with they would only give me a gift card for the same value. A gift card that is only good for buying stuff in their store.

I once bought a piece of shit Norelco body groomer at Target. Was lazy about returning it, but finally did about 3 or 4 months later without a receipt. Cleaned it up and exchanged for a hair cutting kit for a few $ more.

Best Buy is quite anal about all returns and exchanges
