Leaving in 15 minutes from Raleigh, making 5 stops. I'm not even sure where since I just found out yesterday we were going, but I know I will love it since it's only the best style of bbq ever.

I don't see the point of going to 5 places in 1 day

Maybe go to 2 places and stuff your face over a period of 6-7 hours

After the 3rd or 4th different place, the bbq will start to blend together

Same reason I've never done a reverse gangbang

out towards ashboro on 64 there is a place called blue mist barbq. i've never stopped there but always wanted to. it looks like one of those whole in the wall barbq places that could be really good. the other day i heard from a avery trusted source that it was so good, the guy i knew actually went there twice in one day, once on his way to raleigh and once on his way back. i will be eating at this joint.

Going with 3 people, we will take turns eating a meal or just tasting to compare. Although I'm not sure I can hold myself back from having 5 bbq meals.

um, wilson

you can hit 2 places within 1 mile that will own everything else at the Forest Hills Rd/Downing St. intersection, then go down FH to Ward and turn left, go about another mile or so, 2nd place will be on the left

I could understand a rib roadtrip, a steak roadtrip, or even a great sandwich roadtrip, but why waste a day tracking down food which will be mediocre at best?

I think I'd rather go to one great BBQ place, sit down, and really enjoy myself than to go to a bunch of places and sample food all day.

take it from someone that knows Wilbur personally

you have to either get there at 11 or 5 to get the best stuff.
I used to go in there 3 times a week and sit and talk, thats when they make it fresh.
It is world famous though, certainly one place you have to try.

Guy Parkers is good too, but the one out in Seven Springs is the best, cant think of the name..right over by sleepy creek

Wilber's is past its prime nowadays. The best places in Goldsboro used to be Guy Parker's and Scott's. Guy's is closed down now (since he died; very nice old dude) and Scott's is only open one or two days a week AFAIK.

Might I recommend Grady's BBQ in Dudley. The best eastern style around IMO. (this would be the one near Sleepy Creek mentioned)

Went to Grady's in Dudley
Wilber's in Goldsboro which was pretty good- got there at 11
Then Skylight Inn
Then B's
Then Jack Cobb in Farmville
Then Parker's in Wilson (which I already go to once a month)
Then Bill's in Wilson

All were very good, varying amounts of vinegar but I tried them all without adding extra first. Wilber's and Parkers were the only ones I didn't add a little more. Got to go from Bill's and Parker's since I was pretty full by then. We ended up just splitting bbq plates at most places. Interestingly I tasted the most smokiness in Bill's, but that may have been because there was very little vinegar in it.

Shealys in Leesville, SC is the best BBQ I have ever eaten. Its buffet style and on Fridays they have all you can eat baby back ribs. With drink its like $10.50 I crave that place all the time.

The BBQ trail is for originalists, those who cook using wood or charcoal. While Bill's and Parkers are 'good', they use gas grills, which might be convenient for mass production and meeting local zoning codes, but it's not authentic.

In the past (1800's to about 1960 or so), original NC BBQ was cooked pit style, by digging a long trench directly into the ground, throwing down logs/charcoal and cooking pigs uncovered on the ground, suspended by several crossmembers. Modern health codes would never allow such things, but that's original NC BBQ.

I can't believe the NCBS doesn't have coopers in Raleigh on the list. I know they used to pit cook the hogs but maybe they don't anymore?

grady's out there by sleepy creek is pretty good
parker's will do in a pinch

but, as i've said on here a hundred times, the best is at stonewall's grill in hoodswamp. they only cook hogs on saturday and if you don't get there before 12:30 you might not get any bbq.

[Edited on December 29, 2009 at 8:46 PM. Reason : mccall's actually has decent bbq, but i wouldn't go there just b/c of the bbq. they cook on wood]
