sir ian mckellen (Gandalf/magneto) is also a knight. I think the queen just uses it to meet people that she wants to meet, she must get bored.

being knighted seems to have a lot more to do with the 'advancement of british' worldwide than the defense of british as it once did. Makes me wonder why Gordon Ramsay and the Top Gear guys aren't knighted.
