i think we can all agree that 2010 is a big let down as far as delivering a highly technologically advanced civilization
instead all we got were lifelike DVR's who get tired and go to sleep
so why does hollywood continually make futuristic movies with flying cars, etc in the not to distant future

at this rate we will not see flying cars till 2300

what do you think we'll have by 2100?

people have a hard enough time driving in 2-d, much less adding a third dimension.

have you seen our TeeVees?

have you played our games?

have you see our interwebs?

I think we're doing ok...

I mean, we're working on it...

you want high tech, watch the biotechnology front over the next 50 years... I bet the advances blow you the fuck away

i'll give you game visuals and the internet
but game controllers are stuck in 1990, and tv's are just slightly clearer, whoopty doo

^yeah i think that is one thing we didnt anticipate, that technology has spurts of growth and stagnation, and im waiting for the next big catalyst to drive progress

dont know what will emerge though

Probably when (if ?) we figure out our energy problems technology will take off again

I feel like hovering/flying cars would burn a shit ton of gas

Im holding my breath for teleportation though

what you're saying is indicative of a major problem with respect to technological innovation

science fiction has spoiled the shit out of us

things like interstellar travel are so far in the future and will require much more technological advancement

but we're pushing forward, and we must keep hope alive

our next serious high tech goals should be mastering the energy problem and interplanetary exploration and eventual colonization (more like habitation like the south pole base... but still)

...

oh yeah, I forgot

AI is totally doable... in some form or fashion

that's the next breakthrough... either through the software or the hardware front

and when we make the machines smarter than we can possibly be, then maybe we can get some movement on cybernetics so WE CAN FUCKING COMPETE WITH THEM

once that happens, the AI and cybernetics, then you really see what exponential technological growth can get us

then the sci-fi may become real

Flying cars and stuff could potentially be a workable technology if we had a powerful-enough energy source. And I don't mean gasoline or some other fossil fuel that will quickly get burned off and contribute bulk to the car. If we can invent Mr. Fusions, all of the shit that was predicted for the year 2000 and onward could become a reality.

unlimited money is the solution to all problems

I am certainly disappointed in several aspects of technology and where we are today. One huge let down is the fact we may only return to the moon by 2020 at the earliest with a mission to Mars nowhere in sight. Another letdown is the lack of plans to build a major maglev train network in the US. That tech. has been around for quite awhile and never taken advantage of. Finally I would have loved to see flying cars we all have dreamed about, but unfortunately that isn't something that will happen this century. People can't handle driving as it is nevermind travel in 3 dimensions where a crash would have much greater consequences. I think they would have to be vehicles where some sort of AI does most of the work. Of course there would be great reluctance to trust that.

The only thing that really upsets me about mortality, is that we wont be able to see the advances of like 100 years from now....assuming we dont wipe ourselves out of course.

Actually, 2010 (the sequel to 2001: a space odyssey). It can't help but make you feel disappointed.

AND HOW WOULD THE FUCKING FLYING CARS FLY?

jesus christ, end it with the fucking flying cars

unless you have achieved near complete mastery of gravity it is a really fucking stupid idea

then you have obviously not been paying attention

do you have any clue how much MORE advanced we are, technologically and scientifically, with each passing decade?

just take the age of the universe

just in my lifetime the estimate has improved from 10-20 billion years down to 13.73 +/- .012 billion years (uncertainty may be higher, but certainly nothing like it was previously)

As others have said, the biggest problem is navigation. Widespread use isn't likely until the flying cars can safely fly themselves. And there will still be advantages to not fighting gravity.
