Apparently the guy built everything himself including the landing gear and engines. It's pretty impressive.

Two observations:

His jeans are way too short.

The plane looks like a badass guitar from the bottom (while flying)

Missile without a man in it.

I bet he cries like a little girl when he finally crashes it.

My roommate and his Aerospace Senior design team built this (video is of it's first flight ever):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cl22wFZVelQ&feature=related

It's a jet powered, dual wing RC plane. It can change wing configuration during flight, from a straight wing to a wing with folded tips.

I believe Wraith was on this team if I remember correctly.

^ I didn't see the wing do anything.

How would that be any better than just putting winglets on it?

I dunno if it did anything in that vid or not...like i said it was the first flight, so they may have just been testing basic controls.

I'm not an aerospace engineer, so I couldnt tell you why or if it's better. That was just the challenge they were presented with for their project I believe.

Who was your roomate? I'm one of the team members in that video. We built that aircraft with wingtips that fold down in flight. Wraith was not on our team, but he was on a different team that built a telescoping wing. That UAV is currently hanging in my man cave (I got it at the end of the semister). Here is the second video of that aircraft when you can see it make a pass with the wingtips down http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZcckXn070Y

It isn't necessarily any better. We were told to reach a stall/max speed of 30/90 kts without using flaps. We were also required, by our professor, to use a varible geometry wing. Two of the teams used a telescoping wing, but our team built a folding wing. For takeoff and landing, we had a nice high aspect ratio wing, but with the wingtips folded down, we were able to reduce drag. We looked into swing-wing, but that was pretty much pointless since we wern't going super-sonic, and also gave us a shit-ton of control problems.

^Long time no talk, old friend . One question... HOW THE FUCK DID YOU GET TO KEEP YOUR PLANE!!?? Didn't they cannibalize it like the rest? If I had the opportunity to keep mine I would have jumped through hoops to get it.

And do concur with Joshua, there isn't really an advantage to having a variable wing structure... it's just that is what our design criteria was for the year. We weren't allowed to have flaps so we had to vary the wing in order to account for what flaps would normally do. Myself and a teammate actually asked if our varying wing could be "a rotation of the trailing edge of the inner wing section in order to increase angle of attack and drag" but Dr. Hall saw right through our shenanigans.

HAHAHhahahaAHAHAHA!!!1!!!one

I guess Dr. Hall didn't want it (which, don't take this the wrong way my brother-of-another-mother, but I thought our plane flew the best). I guess he told Ben to get rid of it after he stripped it, so Ben called me up and asked if I wanted it. I said "shit yeah!". I wasn't even in Raleigh anymore, so Raf picked it up for me. Good 'ole Raf. I miss him. What's Wes up to these days? He's so scene.

It's probably a little bit bigger than this one. This seems to be about the size of the ones we use in senior design, and our one output a whopping 17 lbs of thrust.

They differ in that they have a centrifugal compressor instead of an axial flow compressor. Other than that...they is real turbojets.
