Apparently the guy built everything himself including the landing gear and engines. It's pretty impressive. http://www.fark.com/cgi/vidplayer.pl?IDLink=4464984

He lands it around the 6:15-6:20 mark.

Two observations:His jeans are way too short. The plane looks like a badass guitar from the bottom (while flying)

WHAT A DORK
1/3/2010 3:35:31 PM
stuff like this only further validates my suspicions that I am completely wasting my life
1/3/2010 3:37:26 PM
ThatIs freaking awesome.
1/3/2010 3:40:50 PM
i'm not an airplane nerd, but that's a pretty impressive accomplishment

even if it didnt get off the ground, it sounds ridiculously nice

I wonder what the top speed is.[Edited on January 3, 2010 at 5:02 PM. Reason : .]

Though I walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death I shall fear no evil . . . for I am 80,000 ft and climbing.

that is badass

Missile without a man in it.I bet he cries like a little girl when he finally crashes it.

My roommate and his Aerospace Senior design team built this (video is of it's first flight ever):http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cl22wFZVelQ&feature=relatedIt's a jet powered, dual wing RC plane. It can change wing configuration during flight, from a straight wing to a wing with folded tips.I believe Wraith was on this team if I remember correctly.[Edited on January 3, 2010 at 5:28 PM. ^ I didn't see the wing do anything. How would that be any better than just putting winglets on it?
1/3/2010 5:34:11 PM
I dunno if it did anything in that vid or not...like i said it was the first flight, so they may have just been testing basic controls.I'm not an aerospace engineer, so I couldnt tell you why or if it's better. That was just the challenge they were presented with for their project I believe.

is that geezer actually rocking a pair of capris?
1/3/2010 5:55:11 PM
He's flying a homemade sr71 Pretty sure he's allowed to wear whatever the fuck he wants
1/3/2010 6:39:07 PM
i think the problem is that he wants to wear them

Mr. Joshua,

^Long time no talk, old friend . One question... HOW THE FUCK DID YOU GET TO KEEP YOUR PLANE!!?? Didn't they cannibalize it like the rest? If I had the opportunity to keep mine I would have jumped through hoops to get it.And do concur with Joshua, there isn't really an advantage to having a variable wing structure... it's just that is what our design criteria was for the year. We weren't allowed to have flaps so we had to vary the wing in order to account for what flaps would normally do. Myself and a teammate actually asked if our varying wing could be "a rotation of the trailing edge of the inner wing section in order to increase angle of attack and drag" but Dr. Hall saw right through our shenanigans.

Bill was my roommate. I still see him a few times a year, but he's down in Huntsville working with Boeing now.

what the fuck engine is he using? It sounds like mini turbines
1/5/2010 10:33:32 AM
2 turbojets.... so yes they do sound like turbines, b/c they are...[Edited on January 5, 2010 at 10:37 AM. Reason : s]
1/5/2010 10:37:19 AM
anyone have a picture of one of these engines by itself?
1/5/2010 10:39:08 AM
It's probably a little bit bigger than this one. This seems to be about the size of the ones we use in senior design, and our one output a whopping 17 lbs of thrust.
1/5/2010 10:54:33 AM
They differ in that they have a centrifugal compressor instead of an axial flow compressor. Other than that...they is real turbojets.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUyR0eezwns&feature=relatedbadass as well. I LOVED the SR-71 as a kid, my mom worked on them while she was in the airforce.
