5 cents per bag added to your bill

i, for one, support it. i have a closet full of plastic bags and a few cloth bags that I would bring to the store if I knew I'd be getting taxed. no big deal to keep a few bags in the car.

Would I support a tax? No.

Would I support each business' discretion in setting a higher price or charging for plastic bags? Absolutely.

As colonies, we revolted when our overarching government instituted dumb taxes like this.

I would openly support a state grocery bag tax only if they did away with the state income tax.

Target gives you $0.05 off your order for every reusable shopping bag you bring in

I have tons of resusable shopping bags that I buy with the best intentions to use them but I always forget them when I go shopping. The bag tax would remind me to bring my bags.

^^they say that but i've never gotten 5 cents back. i've checked. oh well.

i would support it. i use the bags sometimes for my smaller trash cans like my bathroom but no big deal. there are too many people who do just throw them away...

i'd support that. we've got a ton of cloth bags, and we usually use them. if we were to forget, i'd pay the cents per bag on my bill.

i like how OBX just straight up stopped using plastic bags

how about supporting a bag deposit?

like cans and bottles in Michigan (and other states). deposit 10 cents per can you buy. turn in the can and get the 10 cents back

go to Harris Teeter, get groceries bagged in HT plastic bags, pay extra dollar for the 20 bags, bring bags back to HT next time you shop, get dollar back.

how's that so difficult and controversial?

eh, occasionally the plastic bags become lunch bags too (if i don't feel like toting the lunch box). so, i'd miss them. but just barely.

it's a plastic bag... they cost way less than a penny. why would i want to pay MORE for one?

how about first training grocery store baggers to not double bag each item individually? fill up each bag the way they are intended and there you have just significantly cut the amount of bags used.

As long it's Harris Teeter's decision and not the state's.

I already recycle plastic bags, I have a cabinet stuffed slam full of them. I use them to pick up animal turds and when packing Christmas ornaments they make great padding.

How would this effect the self checkout line ?

You know people would be over stuffing thier bags to save a nickel

I forsee lots of busted bags and broken glass and ruined produces, costing the stores a lot more than 5 cents

^^^If the bag busts because a CUSTOMER overpacked the bag, it shouldnt cost the store anything at all.

I know that's not how it always works, but it's ridiculous.

my point exactly. you are the proud owner of the cans. you're paying for the can as well as the contents of the can. you can either keep the can as a reminder of the delicious brew it once contained, or you can sell it, depreciation-free.

same with the bags. you buy them for a nickle and you can do with them whatever you please. if you want to, you can bring them back to the store the next time and save a nickle. or if you want, you can throw them away and throw away your nickle.

it's all about choice

You people whine so much about taxes and then wonder why this state is in the fucking gutter.

A tax on bags would help the environment, reduce waste, and bring in revenue. It's win/win/win.

Ditto.

I generally don't get a bag if I can avoid it. It's amazing how many you can prevent if you just make a habit of telling the cashier you don't need a bag when it's just a small stack of items that you can carry without one. When I do get a bag it gets reused or recycled.

I don't see any reason the government should be taking money if I choose to get a bag though. Where would the money go? Why should I pad their budgets more than I already do with the thousands I pay in sales and property taxes every year?

Perhaps the worst thing about using a grocery bag for cat poo is when there is a little tiny hole in the plastic that you are unaware of. You then place said clumped poo in the bag and tie up the knot, only to have little specks of litter spill out onto your foot.

I don't wonder why it's in the gutter, I know why it is. Greedy politicians and already poorly spent funds. If the people we elect can't spend the money that they take from us wisely, or how we want them to spend it, we need to put someone in office who can get the job done.

^^True.

But at the same time, people want less taxes but more free shit. They want parks, they want good schools, they want well funded emergency services, but they still argue for less taxes. How do they think things get paid for?

Bullshit.
They'll just divert the funds into something we're already paying for.
It's not going to help the environment. In an ideal world it would, but we live in North "LOTTERY FOR EDUCATION" Carolina.
