I think I spent a solid 30 minutes telling my husband about this game...and let me just say, you don't realize how weird it sounds until you're sitting there going, "But if you go to the Druids' island, they put you in a cage over a fire and you use the dress to beat out the flames, and if you haven't made the rain potion in your lamp then you're screwed because it won't start raining and put out the fire. Once that happens the Druids are like 'respect,' and you can go get Death's horse and rescue the princess's murdered parents from the Land of the Dead, and then the ending is much happier and you get more points."

I messed around with it, but usually ended up playing Zork or jacking off to Leisure Suit Larry

The really early ones were way too hard...I kept walking the guy off a cliff in one of them (KQ2, maybe?) 4 was somewhat more cooperative, but I never did get all the way through it.

When they came out with the new one, Mask of Eternity, I was all excited, until you had to start it off by fighting fucking zombies. That is NOT what the game is about.

Yeah, dude. There's a bear trying to get the honey, so you give the fish to it, and then get the bee's honey...and do something with it.

Shit! Why did you need the honey? (I didn't play 5 as much as 6 or 7.)

The thing I remember about 5 was having to find the golden heart in the witch's forest and give it to the tree to turn her back into a woman and get her harp, which you used to...catch something. There was also a haystack with a needle in it and you had to get the ants to help you.

[Edited on January 4, 2010 at 8:34 PM. Reason : OH WAIT...you had to befriend the bees for something...?]

not only have i played and continue to play all the King's Quest games, I played most of the space quests, conquest of the longbow, conquest of camelot, some leisure suit larry...pretty much if the game had a sierra logo on it and it was an adventure game then i played it.

I played the hell out of 6 cause it was the only game i had for a long time. If you didn't talk to the jester in like the 3rd scene you were fucked 20 hours later in the game, and there wasn't a thing you could do about it.

OH MY GOD, I FORGOT ABOUT CONQUEST OF THE LONGBOW. I loaded that on my grandma's computer so I could ignore my family when they got on my nerves (at age 10).

Whatever happened to Sierra? Do they still exist?

According to wikipedia:

Quote :
"In 2008, Sierra parent company Vivendi Games Universal, which had since been renamed Vivendi Games in 2006, merged with video game publisher Activision to form the Activision Blizzard holding company. Vivendi Games ceased to exist and ownership of Sierra was transferred over to Activision. Later that year, Sierra was closed down for possible future sale."

in short, nope, they got shut down just over a year ago.

i played 5 and 6 religiously. took me forever to get up the rock stairs in part 6 because i didn't have the manual. KQ7 i never played just because i found the intro very hokey.

^MEGARACE was the name of the racing game with all the tracks.

I cant remember which one I used to play, just that if you put a speech bubble over some plants the game would say "the plants, say nothing" and there was a drunk dude in the streets in a village yelling "Old lamps, for newwwwwww, old lamps, for new"

Anyone ever play the Homestar Runner parody, Peasant's Quest? That was a pretty spot-on take on KQ1, as I'm reminded by watching that playthrough.

+2 because the narrator of the CD version is Bill Ratner, the same guy who does the bumpers for WRAL. I never had it, though. My dad bought the DOS version for me the day it came out...TWELVE 5.25" floppies.

there are a lot of crappy things about my job, but there are some great things that balance it all out.

one of those great things is the fact that i have access to literally tons of hardware and software, from 2009 stuff all the way back to PCjrs, c64s, and old apples. i almost have a complete collection of the original installation floppies from kings quest, space quest, and leisure suit larry series. and police quest

dont know if they have any value but its cool. the only thing is that those games are REALLY hard to play on a fast processor so i had to build a 486dx machine to be able to play most of them like they should be played

my workstations are like museums, its really neat

I played KQ. I remember the little red riding hood quest and the witch that drove out of her cave in a limo. It was ftw, before ftw existed.

Ah yes, in order to get the heart, you have to get the genie's lamp from the temple in the desert. When the witch fucks with it, the genie comes out and curses her to the lamp for like 2000 years or something. I think when you get the harp from the tree woman you use it on the wolves at the Ice Queen's palace. I played the hell out of some King's Quest 5 and 6 but never beat 6.

I was also an avid player of Leisure Suit Larry, Space Quest, and Quest for Glory. I remember the Leisure Suit Larry games had a quiz at the beginning to stop kids from playing. I would always memorize the answers, heh. Space Quest was frickin hilarious, especially Space Quest IV. I still quote that game today. And Quest for Glory IV: Shadows of Darkness had John Rhys-Davies as the narrator. Good times.

I played KQ and Space Quest. Don't remember much about either other than I had fun playing them and some of the puzzles were tricky.

Wish I could give them another shot someday.

there was this one game back in the early 90's / late 80's you were a captain of a ship (had a pick of a few ships) you configured it (from starting money) and then you'd run missions (cargo and such) but we could never figure out how to start them, or get them or move the ship or something. it seemed like such a cool game too...

my brother and I played kq4 all the way to the end but as we were leaving the witches castle on the horse we kept on falling off the fucking cliff because you had to use a goddamn keyboard to control the horse so we said fuck it and never saved the fairy queen

oh well

I'd like to find one with the voice-overs rather than text-only, because I miss hearing Robbie Williams as Prince Alexander. (He was the voice of the Beast in the Disney Beauty and the Beast, and I totally recognized his name on the voice credits of the game!)

There are quite a few, and the genre's been making a comeback lately. But the Sierra games have nothing on Grim Fandango.

For more recent ones, take a look at Ceville or A Vampyre Story
