A master of the guitar, getting up in the Hendrix range. Only these two can pull off their unique sound:

vinylbandit, I generally agree with most everything you say about music, but I must disagree with that statement

SRV plays much more cleanly than Hendrix
and Hendrix plays leads that SRV couldn't have come up with in a thousand years

I suppose I should say that SRV's tone and style are almost identical (by design) to Hendrix.

I'd agree that he was nowhere near the player that Hendrix was.

However, Clapton is nowhere near Hendrix either, and I have no idea what's supposed to be similar between Clapton and Hendrix in that clip.

that clip isn't meant to relate to Hendrix, that was just a general statement. You are pretty limited on what you can find to link to...

really, for me the guitarist who sounds most like Hendrix is Paul McCartney
his leads have the same sort of crazy creativity
though of course he's not nearly as good

I think that's just a coincidence created by the fact that McCartney doesn't really know what he's doing.

Some of that shit Tim Reynolds does is way more impressive if you ask me.

^^ The way you phrased it implies that they both can achieve the same sound that no one else can.

LOL

SRV did NOT, by tone, style, and certainly not design, try to emulate Hendrix. Same songs? Sure. Totally different approach, even in playing style.

and Hendrix came up with a million leads, no disrespect, but I wouldn't say he played leads that SRV couldn't have come up with in a thousand years.

Hendrix just took from Buddy Guy, btw.

Then why pick Clapton?

His sound isn't nearly as unique as Hendrix's; there are plenty of guitarists who are excellent players and have "unique" sounds by the Clapton standards.

BlackDog, I don't like to call randoms on the internet this because it usually goes against the principles of debating something without looking like a douche, but you're an idiot. You do not understand English very well at all if you think what you said implies multiple sounds.

^^For example Joe Walsh

it's hard to imagine, I know. However Joe Walsh took this to an extreme, if you listen to him at Woodstock and then listen to him on Crossroads Guitar Festival you'd know what I mean.

^^^^
a distinction must be drawn between raw technical ability on the one hand, and the notes/melodies the guitarist composes and plays on the other. Clapton was an incredibly clean, almost quintessentially superb technical guitarist; he had guitar-playing skills out the ass. The notes/melodies he played were also superb, but perhaps not up to the level of his technical ability.

Hendrix, on the other hand, was very flashy and quick-fingered, but his playing was always a little sloppy and a case could perhaps be made that in raw technical ability Eric Clapton was his equal or even superior. But in terms of the notes/melodies played, neither Clapton nor any other rock/blues guitarist comes anywhere close to Hendrix.

And ultimately, excellent technique + superlative songwriting/leads >>> superlative technique + excellent songwriting/leads.
