Get them while they're hot!

http://dealnews.com/32-off-Space-Shuttles-at-NASA-Deals-from-28-800-000-free-shipping-more/342463.html

Quote :
"NASA has discounted the price of its soon-to-be-retired space shuttles to $28,800,000 each. With transportation to a major airport included in the price (does that count as free shipping?), that's the best deal we've ever seen on a space vehicle. According to the Press Association article, Atlantis and Endeavour are "up for grabs", and the new, Smithsonian-sealed Enterprise may be available for purchase. (Enterprise never made it to space.) If you're lucky enough to get a shuttle, you must display it indoors in a climate-controlled building. Deal ends February 19, and a delivery date of "late 2011" is scheduled.

Of note, NASA is also offering the space shuttle's main engines for free, a price drop of up to $800,000 and the lowest total price we've seen."

I bet this means we are going to see a NASA shuttle engine strapped to the back of a tractor at the state fair tractor pull next year.

I guess there was also no Shuttle during the Saturn V days?

NASA is always holding a bag of goodies that aren't shown to the public until it's almost impossible not to.

Better lock in your bid now, before another one crashes and the price goes up.

You do realize you can't really "fly" a space shuttle right?

They are nothing more than a glorified glider.

with the main engines included for free(see quote in OP) it surely can fly, all you need is to buy some solid boosters to get it into space.

However you are right about landing, they are just a brick with wings coming down.

I've always wondered what would happen if somehow they fucked up the approach when trying to land and overshot the airport or something.

Its not like they could just turn around and try again.

Well they basically land in a salt flat type landing strip, so they would have to overshoot by more than 20-40 miles

They die. With no ejection system. Even the fucking russians had ejection seats in their space shuttles.

If it's any consolation they usually die long before the landing sequence.

Landings have also occurred at Edwards Air Force Base in California and White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico. "

listen, guy, you may have seen the landing of STS-1 at a "salt flat", as you say, (btw, it was Edwards Air Force Base) on the DVD. But, I assure you, they don't "basically land" in "salt flats." Hey, check out the mission brief for the upcoming STS-130

Mission: STS-130
Orbiter: Endeavour
Primary Payload: Tranquility Node 3, cupola
Launch: Feb. 7, 2010 (Targeted for)
Launch Time: 4:39 a.m. EST
Launch Pad: 39A
Landing: Feb. 19 - 11:53 p.m. EST
Landing Site: Kennedy Space Center, Fla.
Mission Duration: 13 days
Inclination/Altitude: 51.6 degrees/122 nautical miles

just stop.

I saw at least 3 different shuttles land on the same salt flat

But just to shut you up, yes most modern shuttle landings are done here:

That one is clearly landing on a runway, which you can see, not a salt flat.

See that smoke come off the tires from where they are hitting the concrete?

And no, its not dust.

wtf are you talking about? A bag of goodies? It's been public knowledge what we have been up to since it was announced. And it's not like the shuttle or Saturn launch vehicles were kept secret until just before they launched.

btw, ask me NASA questions, folks.

Do you think anyone has ever fucked in the space shuttle while it was in orbit?

I mean that as a 100% serious question too.

This also applies to the space station.

Almost certainly. NASA has an official policy on the subject, so I assume it came up at some point. It was mentioned on a Discovery Channel program about space travel. I'll see if I can find it.

Exact same mountains and plenty of landing strips will have some concrete some dirt, depends on the place.
