"13-year-old killed in confrontation with Harnett deputy
Harnett County deputy shot; suspect killed

Posted: Today at 6:01 a.m.
Updated: 12 minutes ago

Cameron, N.C. — A Harnett County deputy shot and killed a heavily armed 13-year-old boy early Tuesday in a confrontation outside a Cameron convenience store, authorities said Tuesday afternoon.

Cpl. S. Assman was shot in the leg during the incident. He was treated at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and was recuperating at home, Sheriff Larry Rollins said.

The name of the teen wasn't released because he was a juvenile, but Rollins said he was an Overhills Middle School eighth-grader who lived with his parents in the Anderson Creek community.

Harnett County authorities initially said the shooting victim was a man, but Rollins said it wasn't until several hours after the incident that they determined he was 13 years old.

Assman and Sgt. T. Daggett were patrolling southwest Harnett County at about 2:25 a.m. when they observed someone sitting in a ditch in front of the Super Mart convenience store, at 1943 N.C. Highway 24/87, Rollins said.

The deputies asked the boy to show them what was in a book bag lying nearby, and they saw a 9 mm and a .22-caliber handgun inside, along with about 250 rounds of ammunition, Rollins said.

The 13-year-old then pulled another 9 mm handgun out and shot Assman in the leg, the sheriff said. Both deputies then returned fire, killing the boy, he said.

Rollins declined to say how many shots the boy fired, how many shots the deputies fired or how many times the boy was hit.

The boy's parents didn't know he was out of the house, the sheriff said. He declined to say whether they knew anything about the boy's weapons and ammunition.

Harnett County Schools Superintendent Phil Ferrell said automated phone calls would be made Tuesday night to the families of all Overhills Middle students to inform them about the incident and let them know grief counselors will be at the school Wednesday.

"We are deeply saddened anytime a student's life is cut short, especially in a tragic situation like this," Ferrell said.

The State Bureau of Investigation was called to investigate, which is routine in an officer-involved shooting. Assman and Daggett have been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation."

i think it's kinda gay that officers always get placed on leave whenever they have to fire their weapons. i mean they're authorized to use them, so why not let them keep doing their jobs until an investigation shows otherwise. i know it's paid leave and all, but it just seems sort of stigmatic

I wouldn't call it tragic. Kid was up to no good in a ditch with three guns and 250 rounds of ammunition. He got caught and then shot a deputy in the leg while trying to kill him.

Sounds like the kid got what he deserved.

yeah, the kid had it coming. if not today, sometime in the future. he was not on the path to model citizenship, that's for sure.

i do find it tragic that he was already shooting cops at 13. someone failed him big time.

So, when I open and concealed carry 3 guns, with each one in condition 1, and a spare mag for each, that means I have a death wish?

nah, but pointing them at a cop or firing them at a cop does

and this is no kid, don't call him that. he knows he shouldn't have those firearms (I highly doubt they were obtained legally), he knows killing is wrong, and he knows he shouldn't point a gun at/fire at cops. this person is nothing but another thug who doesn't deserve to walk around freely or even spend his life in prison.

he mighta been somebodys lackey who got scared and panicked when he got busted... Maybe he would have been tried as an adult for shooting a cop in the leg, or maybe not.

i'd say it's still tragic, if for no other reason than the kid put himself in the situation at all, and especially so young...still,

Yeah, he deserved to die, right? I'm sure his mother agrees with you.

This is closer to the truth. Normal kids don't get to this point. There's a reason he was carrying guns, and if we just dismiss it as "a bad apple who deserved to get killed, fucking had it coming," then we're no better.

I didn't say he deserved to die, just that society (and his parents, and he himself) is better off with him dead.

He had been miserably failed, and at the age of 13, he had the balls/stupidity/criminality to be outside the house at 2:30 am with tons of weapons and ammo, and to shoot at a cop. He was failed terribly.

And chances are extremely high that he would have continued to be failed miserably (whether he had gone to jail/juvie, or been sentenced to probation at home) and to become even more hardcore. Yes, there is a chance that he could have become a loving model son, but they are quite slim.

if he's old enough to intentionally shoot someone he's old enough to get shot

let's not act like some crooked cop unloaded a clip into the ball pit at a chuck e cheese

And because he wasn't raised properly, at an age where we could still rehabilitate him, he deserved to be killed for his actions? No wonder you live in the middle east.

So he's better off dead, even though there's a chance he could have been a great person?

A 5 year old is old enough to handle a gun. Is he old enough to be shot also?

It has nothing to do with the cop. The point is that this kid was pushed to the point where he was desperate enough to pull a gun on a police officer. It's a sad situation.

It's this kind of dismissive attitude that is why we have one of the largest percentages of incarcerated people in the world. We just abandon felons and throw away the key. Fuck em. Kill em. Whatever. Right?

Dude, can you fucking read? I NEVER said he deserved to die. I said it in the very post you are quoting from. Don't attribute lies to me.

With that one sentence, you are throwing out any credibility you ever had in moral discussion threads such as these. It goes against everything you have ever stood for, not to mention, it is completely irrelevant and illogical to bring that up.
