Aftershock.. not exactly a big surprise.

The Loma Prieto quake in '89 had 20 quakes over a 4.0 strength in the hours and days following the bigger one, including a 5.8.

he said there was a pastor on The View who said these things, and he actually told me the story with this look in his eye that says "Yes, I believe every word I'm saying to you to be true and accurate."

see i said it was an aftershock too, but my paralegal said when she was watching the news this morning they were referring to it as an eathquake because of how long after the original it happened

and i just googled it and most news sites are saying "another earthquake struck haiti wednesday morning"

Aftershocks can happen weeks after the initial quake, though they typically won't be as strong. There is NO way they had two completely separate quakes on the same fault-line one week apart. That is pretty much impossible.

i found this

http://www.ibiblio.org/prism/May96/haiti.html

Quote :
"What followed his synopsis, however, was a bizarre narrative. He flatly declared that the successful Haitian revolution against the French Army was inaugurated with a bargain. Jean Jacques Dessalines, the Haitian leader of the revolution, according to this preacher, had struck a deal with the devil. With complete seriousness, our intrepid young missionary, explained that Satan himself, disguised as a voodoo deity, contracted with Dessalines to assure him a military victory. In exchange for the victory, Satan was to be given control of the new nation for a period of 200 years. "

An aftershock is an Earthquake. It just follows the larger shock in days and weeks after, like NyM410 said.

The aftershock this morning originated at a very shallow location nearby the initial earthquake location.

alright then that would be why both articles said aftershock and new earthquake

but it was still a "new" earthquake
^^ but before he edited in one of his first post he said there was no way it was a NEW earthquake

in othernews someone came in the office and told me NC was 200 years overdue for an earthquake

you people...

an aftershock IS an earthquake... the place this earthquake happened was "destabilized" by the original quake, and the "aftershock" or "new earthquake" was a result of that.

my tsunami reference was meant to highlight just cause there is a wave in the ocean doesnt make it a tsunami, even if its after a tsunami
same with earthquakes and aftershocks,
there is a qualification for earthquake and aftershock

earthquake is defined as the initial seismic movement causing by significant tectonic displacement
aftershock is just a realignment of tectonic plates in a new formation
technically an aftershock is not an earthquake

Jesus dude, you are looking at it upside down.

Tsunami is a SUBSET of Wave.

Aftershock is a SUBSET of Earthquake.

Wow, so didn't mean to start a debate on this.

My point was that people were acting like this is some crazy coincidence and TWO separate and completely unrelated events happened to Haiti, which is absurd...

And there was a very small quake that was felt in Raleigh in 2004 or so that was centered in Virginia.
