"UPDATE: Some changes have been made to the ongoing forecast based on the latest developments in the model data. However, considering how complex this weather system is...the consistency from the previous model cycle is remarkably good. The higher confidence icing area that extends from Sanford and Rockingham into Fayetteville and Goldsboro remains the same. It now appears that more icing could occur to the south and west of Asheville but since this is a new development - confidence is only moderate at this time. Snowfall amounts are up somewhat over Spruce Pine and toward the VA border but a good part of that snow will be dry.

UPDATED FORECAST:

FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY:

WESTERN: Snow. Snow mixing with or changing to freezing rain and sleet by Saturday morning, especially southern parts of the area. Precipitation tapering off later Saturday afternoon. Temps in the 20s. Winds around 10-15 MPH.

SNOWFALL: 6-12”, except 10-15" over Spruce Pine. The snow will start wet then tend to dry out but remain an icy snow through the event.

ICE: 1/4-1/2" western Haywood. 1/8-1/4" southern/western Buncombe county into eastern Haywood county. Up to 1/8” around downtown Asheville points north and east.
-----------------------------------------------------------

NORTHERN: Snow, sleet and freezing rain...heaviest Sat AM. Mainly snow north of Raleigh with the most icing over the far south. The wintry mix will taper off later Saturday evening. Temps falling into the mid 20s north to near 30 south by Sat AM then mainly in the 20s during Saturday. NE winds 10-20 MPH. Some gusts to 25 MPH Sat afternoon.

SNOWFALL: 6-12” from Cary across Raleigh to northern Zebulon points north. Heaviest near the VA border where a few amounts over 12" are possible. Snowfall tapering to 1-3” over southeast Zebulon. The snow will be dry over the north and trend wetter and icy south of Raleigh.

ICE: 1/4-3/8” southern Garner and southern Zebulon....tapering off rapidly to less than 1/8" in central Zebulon and central Garner.
-----------------------------------------------------------

SOUTHERN/EASTERN: Sleet and freezing rain developing first from Sanford to northern Goldsboro by later in the evening with rain elsewhere. Ice will change to snow by early Sat AM over northern Sanford. The freezing rain/sleet line will collapse southward toward the SC border and western/northern parts of Wilmington and Morehead City by Sat AM. The precipitation will taper off and end from SW to NE late Sat evening. Temps falling through the 30s north and 40s south Fri night then 20s north to 30s south on Sat. Winds E/NE 10-15 MPH Fri night then N/NE 10-20 GUSTS to 25 MPH on Sat.

SNOW: 5-9” northern Sanford. 3-5” central Sanford. 1-3” sleet/snow southern Sanford and far northern parts of Fayetteville and Goldsboro. The snow will be light-moderately wet and icy.

ICE: 1/4-1/2” southern Sanford, northeast Rockingham, much of Fayetteville, and Goldsboro. 1/8-1/4” extending as far south as northern parts of Hartsville and northern Wilmington."

Wait, does that update really say 6-12" for the Raleigh area? Anyone want to heavily dispute this, besides everyone?

Fuck this shit. Seriously, fuck-this-shit. I lived in NC all my life up through high school, went to college in Virginia and came back regularly, was stationed there from 2003 - 2008 and you fucks get more snow in one winter while I'm stuck in goddamned Alabama than I have seen in my entire life.

Oh I remember seeing pictures of that. I say pictures because despite the fact that everywhere else in Virginia got at least 6" and everywhere else in the mountains got 12" . . . LEXINGTON GOT 0.00"

I'm not sure what the hell was even falling for most of today. It was a fine frozen mist that resulted in the ground now being a solid sheet of ice. I think we probably had about 5" of snow before it got compacted by all the sleet/freezing rain/frozen fog that fell on top of it.
