http://money.cnn.com/2010/01/29/news/companies/mancrunch_ad_super_bowl/index.htm?cnn=yes&hpt=T2

Quote :
"NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Super Bowl network CBS rejected an ad Friday from ManCrunch.com, a gay dating Web site.

"After reviewing the ad, which is entirely commercial in nature, our standards and practices department decided not to accept this particular spot," said CBS spokeswoman Shannon Jacobs. "We are always open to working with a client on alternative submissions."

CBS (CBS, Fortune 500) said it turned down the ad partly for financial reasons, but ManCrunch believes that there's more to it than that.

"It's straight-up discrimination," said Elissa Buchter, spokeswoman for the Toronto-based dating site.

Jacobs of CBS declined to comment on the charge of discrimination.

Buchter provided a copy of the CBS rejection letter to CNNMoney, which states that the ad "is not within the Network's broadcast standards for Super Bowl Sunday."

The letter also states that the CBS sales department "has had difficulty verifying [ManCrunch's] credit status." "

I hope all the idiots in that sports talk thread come here to say that they're just as pissed about this ad being pulled.

Oh dear, somebody somewhere might be offended! Because the TV networks are usually such bastions of family values...

I'd also venture to say this isn't exactly an undesirable outcome for their marketing department. Obviously they'd love to air the ad, but the news coverage of this is bunch of free coverage.

This is an ideal outcome for this site. They were talking about this all day on ESPN and on sports talk radio. They saved 3 mil and they're getting all kinds of pub that they frankly might not have gotten if it had aired. Most commercials are forgotten by the end of the game. In most cases you only remember 1 or 2.

They're getting way more media coverage this way than 30seconds during the superbowl. This is the best thing that could have happened to them,

Plus they won't be out 300k or whatever they charge nowadays

So? STFU. CBS is a privately owned company. They can pick and choose what they want.

Not only that, how many gay guys do they expect to appeal to? This is nothing but attention whoring. They knew they would be shot down, and in doing so, they would use the rejection as a publicity opportunity and get their name out, which is probably more successful than if CBS allowed the ad to air.

This is practically free advertising.

^^While I know many gay people who are into football (for example the mayor of chapel hill is gay & I've seen him raise his voice to the tv screen when a football game is on, on more than one occasion), I'm betting the marketing people who came up with this ad knew exactly what they were doing & what would happen.

Someone embed. There is no way they would use a crap made commercial like that in the Super Bowl if they in fact were granted a spot. It was a publicity stunt, nothing more.
