yeah i think it's cool that your preference for cilantro is more genetic than acquiredmost people either love it or think it tastes like soapi am of the former persuasion

Also called as coriander. Those who like it, do you also like it in dried powdered form? It is used in South Asian cooking like that (Indian, Paki, etc). They NEVER use it fresh, for some reason I do not know.I kind of like it fresh, but I absolutely detest it the way brown people use it.P.S. Forgot to say, in dried powdered form it tastes completely different to the way it tastes fresh, unlike other herbs such as basil, rosemary, mint, etc. I have had it my whole life in the dried powdered form, and when I first had it fresh in the US at the age of 24 or so, I couldn't believe that it was the same thing![Edited on February 12, 2010 at 7:36 AM. Cilantro saved kittens from a burning building once.

i assume oep is referring to the dried, crushed seeds of the plant. they are also pretty awesome whole. [Edited on February 12, 2010 at 8:16 AM. Reason : dried cilantro leaves r terribly bland- worse than dried basil or parsley. ugh! only good for color]
2/12/2010 8:15:12 AM
pretty much the rest of the world refers the entire plant as coriander
2/12/2010 8:16:29 AM
sure but there is another dried, powdered "cilantro" product
2/12/2010 8:17:34 AM
I used fresh cilantro last night in my quinoa and black beans recipe
2/12/2010 8:24:28 AM
Hate it.

I lived in the Caribbean for a few years and cilantro was in nearly every single dish. After a few years I started hating it and I could notice if even a tiny amount was in my food. I detoxed after I got home, and now I love it and it's an essential ingredient in a lot of the food I make.My cilantro bundles usually rot before I can use it all, so I bought some dried cilantro once. It didn't have any flavor at all. The only purpose I found for it was that it added a bit of color to your food. Really only useful for presentation.Maybe it was a bad brand. For now I'm sticking to the bundles. They are less than a dollar and they keep a bit longer if you wrap them in a paper towel.[Edited on February 12, 2010 at 8:37 AM. Reason : -]

I learned something new!So 'coriander' powder as used in South Asian cooking is ground up dried seeds.'Cilantro' as used in the West is the fresh leaves of the plant. And now I see that 'cilantro' (leaves) are also sold dried powdered/broken. And duh, they are green, as they should be! That explains why 'coriander' powder is brown as tastes so different! I am such a moron sometimes
