2/14/2010 10:26:10 PM

2/14/2010 10:37:53 PM
I've had it before, but yeah my main point is unlike other liquors, it burns your throat much longer
2/14/2010 10:40:00 PM
never had the wormwood shit but the regular shit is whatever, nothing special
2/14/2010 10:40:59 PM

I, too, watch Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations
2/14/2010 10:45:13 PM
When did they start making red absinthe? I thought the reason it was grean was from the wormwood and other herbs and shit used to make it.

you dont drink Absinthe straight
3/27/2010 6:26:33 PM
you would if you were TUFF
3/27/2010 6:34:59 PM
Absinthe is what you drink when you're done drinking for the night.
3/27/2010 6:53:28 PM
tried it...like vaguely psychedelic coffee
3/27/2010 6:55:55 PM
its not psychedelic at all.you would have to drink like 10x the amount that would kill you from alcohol poisoning before you could even start to think about feeling the effects from the thujone in modern absynthe
3/27/2010 6:57:34 PM
i think of all the times i drank absinthe, the most i ever felt was drunk
3/27/2010 7:01:54 PM
Moulin Rouge is what made me aware of Absinthe for the first timeEver since then I always wondered what that strange drink that you poured over a sugar cube was.
3/27/2010 7:02:37 PM
had the real shit. one shot is enough. i was fucked up for hours.....still tastes like rotten mushrooms no matter what you pour it on top of.
3/28/2010 1:21:08 AM
I had Absinthe several years ago. Never again.
3/28/2010 1:27:36 AM
At my favorite bar in Osaka, already hammered, asked the bartender for a drink of his choice.I got absinthe, and didn't remember the rest of the night.
3/28/2010 8:04:19 AM
yeah the taxi driver didn't appreciate your business that night
3/28/2010 8:33:34 AM
^^ that probably would have happened with or without the absinthe and surely would have happened with any other shot of equivalent ABV
3/28/2010 11:12:18 AM
Anyone that says "OH MAN TWO OUNCES OF ABSINTHE FUCKED ME UP FOR HOURS AND I DONT REMEMBER ANYTHING" is a moron. It's still just alcohol, albeit a slightly different buzz imo, but there is no magical wormword or thujone hallucinogen that is going to 'fuck you up'. Sorry.PS: Clandestine is pretty much the best Absinthe of all time. OF ALL TIME. Louches with ease and doesn't need a sugar cube or any of that bullshit. That is, if you can stomach anise.
3/28/2010 12:04:04 PM
I had real Absinthe like 7 years ago that someone brought back with them from travel in Europe. I won't drink it again for the same reasons that I stay away from any higher proof alcohol. It's just way too much bang for my drinking habits.
3/28/2010 12:29:34 PM
^ europe doesn't have "real absinthe" but 7 years ago, absinthe was still illegal in the US, so I can see how the confusion would have happened.7 years ago, the absinthe available in europe was the same as the absinthe available in the US today.Sorry about that.... I think raven928 is the only guy ITT to have had real absinthe.[Edited on March 28, 2010 at 12:46 PM. Reason : s]

define real
3/28/2010 1:09:49 PM
good point. When someone refers to "real absinthe" I presume they are talking about absinthe with hallucinogenic properties due to a significant concentration of thujone derived from wormwood. You know, the traditional historical absinthe.I do not presume that when someone says they drank "real absinthe" that they are referring to a licorice flavored liqueur.

3/28/2010 1:21:28 PM
I was pretty sure by now it was generally accepted that the whole 'hallucinogenic properties' were just a direct result of inferior quality control and distillation methods. It's highly debatable that thujone concentrations were even remotely related to this 'sense of enlightenment' your historical absinthe offered.Just get some Clandestine and drink a glass or two for what it is. An alternative to a good bottle of scotch or cognac. You get a nice coherent buzz that's a great start (or end) to your night. You're provided all the effects of alchohol while 'remaining on the level' -- at least that was my experience.
3/28/2010 1:29:56 PM
Yea and the look and feel of a wooden battleship is also a direct result of inferior quality control and manufacturing methods. Does that mean that an aircraft carrier is a good representation of an 18th centry naval vessel?no.
3/28/2010 1:43:02 PM
I consider real Absinthe to be just that...real Absinthe not Absente, which has added sugar and does not use wormwood. It has nothing to do with the supposed hallucinogenic properties. And as for those hallucinogenic properties, Grandmaster is correct. Thujone is not a hallucinogen in small or high doses. Recent studies also support that 'vintage' Absinthe did not contain anywhere near the previously thought amounts of Thujone. The hallucinogenic properties reported historically are thought to be the result of antiquated distilling techniques or chemical additives used for color. The difference in intoxication produced by Absinthe may be a result of the herbals used in Absinthe that act as CNS stimulants -- Thujone being one of them.
3/28/2010 1:59:22 PM
Wouldn't a more appropriate comparison be a group of people who ingested ecstacy cut with heroin, LSA or LSD recount their experiences and then say "Hey, this is the real shit". When all along, another group has an entirely different experience because they found pharmacy grade MDMA?My point was more along the lines of this misconception that absinthe was supposed to be hallucinogenic all because some artist couldn't afford anything but basement lab quality and god knows what chemicals, bacteria, or incorrect distillation methods caused the reactions.
3/28/2010 2:03:24 PM
Grandmaster, I agree with your point regarding thujone concentrations... Didn't realize there weren't high concentrations back in the day. However, I still disagree with the logic you are using for your examples. If the original "ecstacy" recipe for one hundred years was a hodge podge of LSA, LSD, and heroin, then I would say that that is the traditional recipe. For example, consider soul food and southern cooking in general. A lot of the recipes came about because southerners and freed slaves, as you say, "couldn't afford anything but" vinegar and crappy vegetables. Now that southern culture can afford the finest cheeses and meats, should we say that expensive dining is real soul food? no... we still go back to the simple/whole-hog ingredients for the old fashioned southern cooking. That's my only point there.[Edited on March 28, 2010 at 2:30 PM. Reason : s]
