Oxytocin Shows Promise in Autism
Nasal Spray of Chemical Seems to Help Autistic Kids' Social Functioning

Social function improved in autism-spectrum patients treated with the hormone oxytocin, according to a small study.

A nasal spray of the chemical oxytocin seems to help autistic kids' social functioning, new research reveals.

Following oxytocin inhalation, adults with Asperger's syndrome or high-functioning autism were more inclined to play with the most socially responsive partner in a video ball game, reported Angela Sirigu of the CNRS lab in Bron, France, and colleagues.

Also, when participants were shown pictures of human faces, they were more likely to focus attention on the eyes, an important marker of social interaction, the researchers found. "

Actually, you can, depending on the problem.

Many studies have been done which have shown to fix problems such as ADHD, low grades, lack of motivation, lack of interest in academics, aggression, etc. by making changes in kids' diets.

there's a difference between not feeding your children crap and completely cutting out wheat/dairy/eggs/sugar/etc (allergies aside)

Jenny McCarthy was a lot more fun when she was a wild blonde bimbo. This new version sucks.

you know how you can fix a kid with ADHD, low grades, lack of motivation, aggression, and lack of interest in academics?

It sure as hell isn't what you're feeding him.

It's that his behind isn't tan enough.

good parenting > drugs

I don't know what you meant by that (not being sarcastic).

The studies I am talking about... they added lots of fruits and vegetables, cut out junk food, snack food, sugar, candy, sugary drinks, etc.

Oh, they also gave them like 5-10 grams of fish oil daily (esp for ADHD).

right, well what i'm referring to is parents who think they can cure their children of disabilities by cutting out dairy/wheat/etc.

one of my clients takes oxytocin and he's a person with autism. he's really aggressive, and the drug kinda helps with that....as in he tantrums less frequently.

and axlbonbach, id like to see you try to "spank" this particular client. he's barely a teenager and could easily beat the shit out of anyone who tried to hurt him.

autism isnt a parenting problem. its a developmentally disability. anyone saying that a tantruming kid with autism needs to be beaten can come to my house and see the grave consequences of that belief.

if you have any other questions about autism, PM me.

Man, I hope my future kids don't have autism. I don't have the patience to deal with most average kids, much less autistic ones.

^^^i will say that for individuals with gastrointestinal issues I have seen differences in behavior with the diets. But that is kind of common sense, when you're in pain you're going to be grumpy. Couple that with a communication disorder and you've definitely got more tantruming and off-task behaviors. But as far as curing? Ridiculous. I'd be interested in hearing about the effects of this oxytocin on young children with autism.
