to science....what is your opinion of this?

I'm totally down for it and I wanna do it, but then at the same time I don't know what the deal is if you do this and then funerals...what if the family wants to have a viewing of the body?

how about what do YOU want to have done w/ your body?

I want to be cremated, so viewing is a non-issue. You saw me X years; you don't need to see my corpse. I'm going the organ donor route, so no full body science donation for me.

I kinda want to be plastinated too

But like at what point of time does someone decide to donate their body to science...I mean waiting till your older might be too late, but then deciding now that I wanna donate my body, what if I change my mind 30 years down the line?

Yeah I mean of course that would do...I guess it doesn't really matter what your family thinks, it's your body afterall.

i totally recommend reading 'STIFF' by Mary Roach before deciding. it was a very cool book...

and now i think I want to be frozen with liquid nitrogen and then have sound waves blast me into a bajillion pieces. either that or be converted into a little carbon/nitrogen block that has a seed in the center that you plant and grow a tree.

of course, they could do all of this after my body has been donated to science.

^^how cool!

they like pigs better though

but here is the question...at what point of time do you make your death wishes known? I mean like obviously I'm not planning on dying anytime soon, but what if I got in a car wreck tomorrow, I don't wanna be buried, I want my body to go to the Body World, or at least cremated and have my ashes spread in the ocean.

okay we'll just so y'all know if I die anytime soon someone send this thread to my surviving relatives!

Considering I just want my body burned up to begin with, if they want to chop up beforehand that's fine by me.

^ i have often wondered the same thing (about what if something sudden happened)

i don't want to freak my parents/loved ones out too much so i have considered telling just my mom that there is a letter taped to my fridge (or in a book or something) with my wishes and then she can go with it or not.

I think cemeteries are a waste of land... I understand some people want to grieve or there's some meaning in them, it's just not for me. so I plan on donating my body to a medical school.

for anyone interested, you just preregister at a specific school and they'll give you a packet with all the info. they'll give you a document to keep with your will/other important documents, and you can cancel your decision anytime in writing.

http://www.sciencecare.com, http://www.aatb.org and http://unos.org have more good info.

Well I joked around whenever my mom told me that she wanted to be cremated...she was going on about how she doesn't wanna take up ground space just burn her up and spread her over the ocean and she will be happy...and I was like "Well I want the whole world to stop when I die, I want a parade, and everyone to come to an open casket burial, and I want 3 burial spots just for me and a huge tomb stone, my whole family tree put on the tomb stone...."

I really hope she knows I was joking...

I'm sure she knows I was joking...I mean she knows me well enough to know I wouldn't want that, and I know I have said several times that I wanna donate my body and my organs, but each time my mom would look at me and be all critical and say "why?" and my thing was like why not?

but yeah I mean like I wanna do good after I die, but I also want to be a bit selfish and be put in the ocean with all the mermaids and dead pirates...I'm already an organ donor, so I'll probably just stay with that, and do the cremation thing...hopefully they will have found a colony of mermaids by the time I die.

maybe you could get yourself skeletonized and then placed strategically to become the base for a small coral reef. complete with mermaids of course.

I wonder if that would work...turn your skeleton into a coral reef....I've never thought of that, but if that is something that could happen that would be the best idea ever.

yeah the mermaids and dead pirates kinda sparked the idea.... i mean lots of things can form a base for coral communities to start, but seems like pre-existing calcium carbonate/aragonite would be just as good if not better.

especially if you could start a movement and have a huge web of skeletons. would be an amazing art/recyling/eco-friendly project.

I always thought I'd just donate my body for medical research or to the local necrophiliac's association, but this coral reef idea is awesome!

I could have my skeleton dropped into a coral reef off the coast of Belize, providing extra entertainment for divers. Too cool!

it's NEVER too soon to let your family know your after death wishes.

its NEVER too soon to talk to your family about your feelings on life support, and what kind of quality of life you want to have if you have a devastating accident/illness.

you can cancel your contract to have your body donated for plastination

Quote :
"I may withdraw my consent for my body to be used for Plastination at any
time without having to give a reason, but that I must do so in writing and signed by two witnesses."

i wouldn't mind if my organs are donated, then i want to be buried in a field somewhere. no embalming, no casket. just wrap me in a sheet and throw me in the ground, then plant a tree over my spot.

why would it have to be a secret that you are in the closet? that would be almost as awesome as the reef thing....

be skeletonized, get donated to a 3rd grade class (when I think they learn about bones), live on forever in infamy...and sure, they could dress me up too

I want to be cremated as I feel burial is just a waste of space. I want my organs to be donated first, however. I then want my ashes to be spread over my favorite fishing spots off the coast and then some ashes spread in the woods where I hunt on our land. The ashes that are left I want buried in a little box in our family grave yard. I would also like a kick ass tombstone that has some kind of funny phrase or quote on it.

i wondered the same. i mean it seems fine if it is your property, but i'm sure there are concerns about groundwater contamination.

there are several "natural" cemeteries that allow you to do this, i'm not sure about NC's laws on it. last time i looked at it, the closest one was in SC near the chattahoochee national forest i think.

oh actually that one was the first one in the US. that's cool. Ramsey Creek Preserve

i read this in one article:
Quote :
"Here in North Carolina, there is no state law prohibiting burial of a family member on one’s own private land (though some local ordinances might carry restrictions)"

but i can't find a source.

i'd imagine you'd have more groundwater contamination issues if you are soaked in formaldehyde and buried in a casket made with formaldehyde. that casket would be there for close to forever. just your body in a sheet won't be there for long. imo

----
i found these hybrid burial grounds on the green burial council's website:
Quote :
"Forest Lawn Memorial Park - Hybrid Burial Ground
1498 Sand Hill Rd
Candler NC 28715
828-667-8715
http://www.forestlawnhendersonville.com

Green Hills Cemetery - Hybrid Burial Ground
24 New Leicester Hwy
Asheville NC 28806
828-252-9831
http://www.greenhillscemeteryasheville.com

Pine Forest Memorial Gardens - Hybrid Burial Ground
770 Stadium Dr.
Wake Forest NC 27587
919-556-6776
http://www.pineforestmemorial.com "

Hybrid Burial Grounds are conventional cemeteries offering the option for burial without the need for a vault (partial, inverted or otherwise), A vault lid, concrete box, slab or partitioned liner. Hybrid Burial Grounds shall not require the embalming of decedents and must allow for any kind of eco-friendly burial containers including shrouds.

the quote from the article only says there's no law against being buried on private property. it doesn't mention whether or not you have to be in a casket to be buried on private property.

well, the article i pulled that from was titled "fade to green: eco-friendly burial options", and it mentions being buried in a shroud or biodegradable container.

http://www.lowimpactliving.com/blog/2008/05/19/eco-friendly-burial-options/

and no, it doesn't mention a casket requirement, but i didn't say that it did. i did say that it's just an article and has no source... so take from it what you want.

Not cool.
According to one of my college era housemates, myself and the remaining housemates all have to wear sombreros and fake mustaches to his funeral if he dies before us.
I've been meaning to talk to him and try to get that one voided out.
