I've been on two TWW pages today and Firefox has frozen up. I try to open Task Manager to shut it down and my desktop icons disappear and the whole thing stops responding. I've done the hard shutdown both times and when it restarts, it's fine--at least for a while. Anyone else had this problem or know what I can do to make it stop?I tried searching for help on the problem, but nothing Google returns looks exactly like what I'm experiencing.

I just hate IE so very much. It wasn't displaying pages properly, which is why I switched.Am also running a full Symantec scan to see if I've gotten the TWW hiv. Hope not.[Edited on February 21, 2010 at 8:39 PM. Reason : asdf]

What are the benefits of Chrome over Firefox?
2/21/2010 8:42:20 PM
Chrome is pretty cool. Firefox is for people who just want to all agree that firefox is better than IE... kind of like Apple computers are only for those who want to feel cool and smart for using Apple computers.

It's worth giving it a shot. It might allay my worries that the computer is going to freeze again any moment. I've cleared the cookies, cache, and history as well, just in case, even though I think that has nothing to do with it...so I'm downloading Chrome now, might as well check it out.

This is a very different experience. It's far too pretty for Windows XP Pro.
2/21/2010 8:53:00 PM
Okay, so it just did it again, with an added symptom (which may have been present before; I'm not sure if my speakers were muted). A moment after it stopped responding, the computer made this high-pitched ringing noise (a prolonged beep, I guess) that continued until I shut it down again. This was navigating in Chrome, as I went to check the status of the virus scan.

I think the problem is, as a woman, you suck at logic
2/21/2010 9:02:14 PM
Do you have any malware preventing software like Spybot or Ad-Adware?
2/21/2010 9:07:45 PM
In the process of downloading Ad-Aware right now. This is my work laptop, and all it comes with is Symantec Antivirus. Did a scan of that; it runs automatically at startup, and it came up clean. Also: it locked up again and the internet wasn't even open. Wouldn't let me open any programs--I could get to the volume control and my documents, but not Start menu or open any documents IN programs. WTF.[Edited on February 21, 2010 at 9:18 PM. Reason : afg]

Sweet deal. Also, the Firefox add-on "NoScript" may help as well.Oh shit. Is your data backed up? Do you have recovery CDs?]
2/21/2010 9:18:02 PM
reinstall windows, only viable solution
2/21/2010 9:18:04 PM
Don't have an install disc. If this persists I'll have to give it to our tech guy at work, and although I've cleared the history as mentioned, a couple of the surprise pages on TWW are not going to look good if they go through my computer

System restore has been turned off due to "group policy." (Like I said, this is a work laptop.) Froze in the middle of the Ad-Aware scan.

Leave task manager running.Sort by CPU time.Check to see if a process is hogging all the CPU time when the issue occurs. If not, sort by memory usage and check to see if something is hogging all the memory.Kill the process...Uninstall/delete whatever it is. Reinstall if it's something you need.

Does your company have an IT department who is ultimately responsible for setting up and managing the laptop? If so. Take it to them. If they want to lock you out of shit, then leave it to them to fix it.
2/22/2010 12:19:32 AM
^ Seriously. If you have been looking at Tww on company time, then take the heat. Anyone proper will tell you this. Then again as its also said, its a management issue if they cant keep you properly occupied.

stop using windows

I've only been looking at TWW from home (can't even get it from work, don't think it's gonna make a difference). Our IT guy told me today it'll have to be re-imaged, so I'm backing up my data and taking it in Wednesday morning. Don't think he's even going to check it--just wipe it.Thanks for the advice, all

I know wat dis is, it ur cellphone running out of juice but the muffled sound echoing in ur room making it sound like a puter problem

Looks like a rootkit. You'll need to remove the hard drive and scan it from another computer.
