February 27, 2010 3:07 a.m. EST
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
Magnitude 8.8 quake jolts central Chile, according to U.S. Geological Survey
Tsunami warning has been issued for Chile, Peru
Parts of Santiago, Chile, are without electricity
(CNN) -- An magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck central Chile early Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The quake's epicenter was located near the city of Concepcion, 212 miles (341 kilometers) from the capital of Santiago. It struck at 3:34 a.m., when people were sleeping.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for Chile and Peru. The center recorded a tsunami wave as high as 9 feet.
"An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines near the epicenter within minutes and more distant coastlines within hours," the National Weather Service said in a statement.

It's in the top 10 in recorded history, where recorded history is since 1900.

(source: CNN)

It's also 32 x 32 more powerful than the Haitian earthquake. CNN still hasn't figured out how to multiply those two number together.

Chile also had the largest earthquake in recent history at M9.5 in 1960.

Oddly enough, I've been working on a seismicity report for Chile for my Earthquake Engineering class the last couple days.

I'm only being a dick because there's not really a big chance a tsunami will hit much less do any damage.

well you don't really have to be a dick at all. We can be concerned since they are a few thousand miles away. so fuck off.

the course he works at is on a cliff, so he will be fine. but its startling to wake up to this on the news

Buoy data: http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/dart.shtml

Data from buoys 51406 and 32412 show the tsunami (about half a meter).

about 1.5ft.... doesn't seem that big as a big wide wave in the deep ocean, but should be interesting to see what happens when it hits the shore.

tsunamis aren't all that tall anyway. The 2004 one just kept coming and was only 1 or 2 feet tall in some of the places it devastated. Somoan one was a bit taller but more of the same.
